Synopsis (short abstract) Despite unprecedented rates of economic growth, food insecurity remains a major challenge for many countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Although the output of food grains and other agricultural commodities in many of these predominantly agricultural countries recorded impressive gains, the incomes of small and marginal farmers failed to improve to desired levels. Rural poverty and food insecurity at the household level remain pronounced, despite pervasive government interventions in agricultura l markets. Apart from internal challenges, the countries of the region also face challenges posed by rapid changes in the international trade and economic environment. FAO brought together the above mini roundtable meeting to seek the views of member countries and to establish priorities for its programme of work in agricultural marketing for the next few years. The proceedings outline the outcome of the two-day roundtable meeting, including the main conclusions and recommendations that emerged.

    Thanks to increased agricultural production and better marketing facilities, poverty and food insecurity are less of a problem in many Asian countries than was the case a few years ago. The new preoccupation of countries in the region is on quality and safety. FAO has been working to improve quality and safety in Asian countries through a wide range of interventions to enhance their capacity to meet international food quality and sanitary and phytosanitary standards, and to establish and maintai n appropriate regulations, monitoring and surveillance. One such intervention is the programme on enhancing food quality and safety by strengthening handling, processing and marketing in the food chain, under which the above workshop was carried out. Held in Bangkok, Thailand from 7 to 10 November 2005, it was the first attempt by FAO to approach quality and safety issues from a marketing perspective. The main issue considered was: What are the constraints faced by farmers and traders in the tra ditional horticultural supply chains to bring safe and quality produce to market? This report provides summaries of the 21 papers and country case studies discussed which focused on identifying ways to overcome constraints on improving traditional marketing channels (complete case studies are provided in the annexes). Conclusions and recommendations are also included in the report.

    There has been a marked upward trend in production and consumption of fruits and vegetables in Asia and the Pacific in recent years. Along with rising consumer demand has come greater awareness of food safety issues and increased need for convenience and quality. Selection of high quality horticultural produce for processing and implementation of good practices during processing operations are required to assure both the quality of the produce and the safety of the final product. This technical guide reviews, from a theoretical and practical perspective, the critical issues that must be addressed for fresh-cut produce to meet consumer demand for convenience, quality and safety. A case study on fresh-cut processing in Thailand is included. The guide should be of practical value to small processors, trainers and extension workers who provide support to individuals engaged in production of fresh-cut tropical produce for sale.
