No results found.The agriculture sector is traditionally the main pillar of the Moldovan economy. In 2020, it employed over 27 percent of the country’s labour force, and accounted for around 12 percent of Moldova’s gross domestic product and approximately 45 percent of total exports. The sector produces a large range of agricultural products, including grains, fruit, vegetables and livestock. In 2016, smallholders represented 98.8 percent of the total number of agricultural producers and cultivated 36.4 percent of the total agricultural land in the country. Smallholders and family farms generate more than 62 percent of the total national volume of agricultural produce, making a fundamental contribution to overall food production and food security. It has been estimated that approximately 70 percent of the rural population depends solely on agriculture for its livelihood. Agricultural production in Moldova is entirely dependent on the import of major agriculture inputs, including fuel, fertilizers and chemical products for plant protection. This dependency makes Moldovan agriculture subject to international price volatility. Insufficient access to quality inputs remains a constraint for competitiveness in a number of subsectors. The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine has created unprecedented challenges for Moldovan farmers. Key challenges relate to reduced access to neighbouring export-import markets and to key agricultural inputs, and the disruption of economic transit routes. In 2022, the government estimated that the ongoing crisis in Ukraine had already affected 70 percent of smallholder farms. -

No results found.Adoption of food loss-reduction measures greatly depends on the knowledge, attitude and practices (KAPs) of the actors. This paper analyses KAPs relevance to food loss reduction among supply chain actors. Focusing on Kajiado and Kitui counties and supply chains to the Kenya home grown school meals programme (HGSMP), face-to-face interviews using structured questionnaires gathered insights from a total of 108 farmers and 90 traders.
Descriptive analysis, factor analysis and multivariate regressions were conducted. The results reveal that farmers in both counties have very different KAPs due to their different socio-cultural and agro-ecological conditions. Further analysis revealed that actors’ knowledge, positive attitudes and practices are specific, distinct and crucial to reducing postharvest losses. Therefore, tailored capacity-development efforts and incentives that encourage behavioural shifts and adoption of appropriate postharvest practices and technologies are recommended to addressing food loss effectively.

No results found.The extent of pre- and post-harvest losses in supply chains linked to the home-grown school meals program (HGSMP) is not documented. This study sought to fill this gap and determine critical loss points along the dried bean supply chain of the HGSMP. The study was conducted in Kajiado and Kitui Counties. Secondary and primary data were collected for this study. Primary data was collected from all the schools implementing the HGSMP and all other supply chain actors linked to the programme within the two counties through interviews and direct measurement of the losses (load-tracking). Data was analysed using the FAO case study methodology. Producers reported quantitative losses of about 18.4% and 6.6% in Kitui and Kajiado Counties, respectively. Traders estimated quantitative losses at 5.8% and 12.6% in Kajiado and Kitui, respectively. The study revealed that the storage stage is a critical loss point for both producers and traders. Promotion of awareness and appropriate technologies and practices for storage and post-harvest handling of food commodities procured for school meals can contribute to reducing losses. Capacity building of supply chain actors on proper pre-harvest agricultural practices and post-harvest management is also essential for the reduction of pre- and post-harvest losses.

The Special Features section covers two different aspects of NWFPs: a specific product (bamboo) and a developing market (cosmetics and beauty care). Bamboo is versatile: it can be transformed, for example, into textiles, charcoal, vinegar, green plastic or paper and can also be used as a food source, a deodorant, an innovative building material and to fuel power stations. Reports indicate that natural c osmetics and beauty care are a huge global market, with forecasts indicating an annual growth of 9 percent through 2008. The Special Feature on Forest cosmetics: NWFP use in the beauty industry builds on this and includes information industry interest and marketing strategies (consumers are being drawn to natural products and thus their content is emphasized). As can be seen from the articles on shea butter in Africa and thanakha in Myanmar, many societies have always used and benefited from nat ural cosmetics. This issue includes other examples of traditional knowledge, such as the uses of the secretions of a poisonous tree frog in Brazil and the use by the traditional healers in India of allelopathic knowledge.
