Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetEmergency response and resilience building to improve livelihoods, food security and nutrition in locust affected regions of Namibia 2022
Also available in:
No results found.Namibia, like many countries in other parts of the world, is experiencing multiple shocks which impact the food and nutrition security of inhabitants especially the most vulnerable (elderly people, women and unemployed youth) segment of society. These shocks include the record climate-induced recurrent droughts in some parts of the country which lasted for more than six consecutive seasons (2013/14 to 2018/19), followed by the COVID-19 pandemic (2020 to 2021), which affected nearly all sectors of the economy and the recent locust outbreaks which ravaged over 1.8 million hectares (including at least 3,000 hectares of cropland). All these shocks have eroded the livelihoods and coping mechanisms of vulnerable households. Through this project, FAO and partners aim to augment the gains realized during the implementation of the Japan-funded and Japan Iinternational Cooperation Agency (JICA) supported project titled “Emergency response and resilience building to improve livelihoods, food security and nutrition in locust affected regions of Namibia”. Specifically, the proposed project aims to strengthen local and national capacities to mitigate these multiple shocks while contributing to scaling out resilient livelihoods with special focus on youth and women-headed households. -
Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetTajikistan: Mitigating the locust spread in Tajikistan and neighbouring countries through Anticipatory Action 2023
Also available in:
No results found. In March–April 2022, the Republic of Tajikistan witnessed an increase of Moroccan locust infestations in its southern areas, and the infestation threatened the bordering regions of Afghanistan. Pastures, and vegetable and orchard productions were at risk of being infested when crops were in early vegetation period. Considering the prevalence of winds in the southern oblast of Khatlon, a cross-border invasion was highly probable. This triggered the activation of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ (FAO’s) Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA) Anticipatory Action window, thanks to the contribution of the German Federal Foreign Office. Due to timely and controlled anticipatory actions, locust infestations were properly treated in Tajikistan, preventing a direct threat to agricultural production and food security in the Khatlon region. This in turn protected the livelihoods and food security of vulnerable populations at risk of being affected by the locust outbreak. -
Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetAnticipatory action to mitigate impacts of the desert locust invasion on food security and livelihoods in the front-line countries of West Africa and the Sahel
Project profile: Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, the Niger and Senegal
2021Also available in:
No results found. The impact of a desert locust invasion may cause nearly 13.4 million people to suffer from acute levels of food insecurity in the targeted countries. This situation would add further strain to the livelihoods of vulnerable people already facing sanitary and socio-economic consequences of coronavirus disease 2019, the impact of climate change and conflict. In accordance with Scenario 1 of FAO’s regional appeal for desert locust launched on 21 May 2020, the project will target six countries, namely: (i) the frontline countries: Chad, Mali, Mauritania and the Niger; and (ii) Burkina Faso and Senegal.
