No results found.Pakistan has an estimated population of around 208 million, with 40 9 million living below the national poverty line The country is not only prone to natural disasters that adversely impact the food security and livelihoods of its inhabitants, but is also vulnerable to climatic changes that are expected to increase the occurrence and severity of droughts in the southern part of the country, especially in Balochistan and Sindh provinces, where between 65 and 95 percent of the population lives in rural areas Drought is increasingly common in these provinces, with serious consequences on food security, livestock, crops, water resources, the environment and aquifers In August 2018 the Provincial Disaster Management Authority of Sindh identified 513 villages in eight districts of Sindh as calamity hit (drought affected) In December 2018 18 districts in Balochistan were identified as calamity hit by the PDMA, Balochistan Both Sindh and Balochistan provinces have a high prevalence of poverty and food insecurity The incidence of multidimensional poverty is 43 percent and 71 percent in Sindh and Balochistan respectively, and even higher in rural areas According to the preliminary results of a National Nutrition Survey in 2018 global acute malnutrition rates are above emergency thresholds in most drought affected districts A Sindh drought needs assessment conducted in October 2018 classified between 32 and 36 percent of HHs 0 72 0 89 million people) as severely food insecure and 1 1 6 million people classified as moderately food insecure A similar assessment conducted in 14 drought affected districts of Balochistan in January 2019 indicated that 58 percent of surveyed HHs experienced moderate or severe hunger In response to the drought emergency in the two provinces the PDMAs declared a state of calamity in the affected districts while the NDMA requested the United Nations System to activate an emergency response coordination system A drought response plan for emergency support to 2 1 million people in the prioritized districts was developed, with a funding requirement of USD 96 3 million in January 2019 to be led by FAO and the World Food Programme ( The current project was developed to provide immediate emergency assistance to extremely food insecure drought affected agro pastoralist communities in the provinces of Balochistan (in Nushki and Chaghi districts) and Sindh (in Umerkot and Sanghar districts) The project would also conduct an Integrated Food Security Phase Classification ( acute food insecurity. -

No results found.Agriculture and livestock account for 97 percent of livelihoods in the newly merged districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Most farmers in these areas are small landholders engaged in crop production at subsistence level. Despite favourable agro climatic conditions, development is hindered by poor post harvest management practices, lack of storage and transport facilities, and limited access to markets. The prolonged conflicts of the past decade have caused extensive damage to the agriculture sector, while the destruction of market infrastructure has disrupted local supply chains and links with external markets. The abandonment of cropland, depleting food stocks and lack of productive resources to resume livelihood support activities, the loss of productive assets, degraded lands, limited access to finance and diminishing coping mechanisms all threaten the food security of the local population. The project was, therefore, designed to focus on issues of food security and sustainable livelihoods, with an emphasis on enterprise development. -

No results found.The Improved Land Tenancy in Sindh Province (ILTS) project, funded by the European Union and in partnership with the Government of Sindh, aims at contributing to responsible land and water governance in Sindh Province and helping its government and land users to address challenges they face regarding land tenure, food security and natural resources management. Its approach is based on the promotion of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT). The evaluation found that the project generated benefits in the domain of civic governance but not in the domain of official governance. Facilitated by its community-level platforms, the project’s outputs contributed significantly to tenant and landlord beneficiaries through the transparency, security and accessibility associated with informal land tenancy agreements and village grievance redressal committees. To this extent, the project has nurtured community-based civic governance for secure landlord-tenant agreements in its project area. The project’s VGGT strategy suffered from limitations in project design and the strategy. Furthermore, no improvements were reported in livestock productivity and community-based disaster risk reduction, which has not yet been introduced. Recommendations to FAO include actions to strengthen targeting, social inclusion, monitoring and evaluation, and sustainability and suggestions on how to optimize engagement with the government and other stakeholders in view of project experiences.

No results found.The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018. -

Transforming food systems for food security, improved nutrition and affordable healthy diets for all
2021In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation.To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world.In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.
