Rice is the staple food of about half the world’s population, 90 percent of whom live in Asia. As the world’s population increases, there will be further demands on the rice supply to meet consumption. This is a major challenge as the growth of rice productivity has stagnated or even declined in recent years because of marginal improvements in the rice yield potential. To overcome this challenge, the application of rice hybrids has been demonstrated as a means to raise the rice yield potential b y exploiting the genetic expression of heterosis or hybrid vigor. This publication is the proceedings of a regional expert consultation on “Hybrid rice development in Asia: Assessment of limitations and potential” jointly organized by the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific and the Asia-Pacific Seed Association from 2 to 3 July 2014 in Bangkok, Thailand.
