The Sahel region is a place of opportunities, rich in human, natural and cultural resources. However, insecurity, climate change, the rise of violent extremism, the erosion of social cohesion and the lack of economic and employment opportunities, are some of the major challenges faced in the region. The regional forum ‘’Building resilience and social cohesion of Sahelian youth through their inclusion in agrifood systems was organized by the FAO in collaboration with the G5 Sahel Secretariat and technically supported by the Mauritania Investment Promotion Agency (APIM), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This guidance note presents the proceedings and deliberations agreed at the regional forum while highlighting priorities for young people’s most urgent needs in order to facilitate social cohesion and their inclusion in the rural development of their territories while identifying existing opportunities to strengthen youth inclusion in agrifood systems. -

No results found.This policy brief is one in a series led by Chulalongkorn University with support from the Office of the Higher Education Commission, Ministry of Education, Thailand, in partnership with FAO. The series was initiated to support the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Work Plan on Education, 2016–2020 implementation while Thailand was Chair of ASEAN in 2019 under the theme: “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability.” The Briefs offer critical interdisciplinary perspectives on agri-food systems from social and sustainability sciences. They are fully aligned with the regional initiative on Food System Transformation and are meant to support the work engaged with ASEAN. This brief focuses on the need for HEIs, international agencies, regional organizations and governments in Southeast Asia to do more to assist youth and tertiary students by providing adequate programmes, curricula, research and extension services. It highlights that it is critical to consider youth as an active partner and to fully include them in better documenting and evaluating youth and student issues while scaling-up best practices. It advocates for improved university services in rural communities to catalyze a paradigm shift from industrial agriculture to diversified agro-ecological systems. -

They have the vision, energy and entrepreneurial spirit to find new and innovative ways to cultivate, create, package and transport the food we all need. If adequately nourished, educated, equipped with resources and involved in decision-making, young people can drive economic transformation and global prosperity. This brief presents the key messages and findings from the FAO report The Status of Youth in Agrifood Systems – the most comprehensive evidence-based analysis of youth engagement in agrifood systems to date. It highlights both the opportunities available to young people and the structural barriers they face, offering actionable recommendations for policymakers and development actors. The aim is to support more equitable and sustainable agrifood systems, where rural youth are not only beneficiaries but also drivers of change.
