This brief provides practical guidelines on storage practices and methodologies to assist southern African farmers prone to natural hazards, mainly cyclones, droughts and floods. Indeed, suboptimal storage of agricultural products can lead to important losses resulting in increased vulnerability of these farmers in normal conditions, but the combined effect of natural disasters and poor storage practices may lead to tremendous losses for small farmers, with devastating effects both from economic and food security points of view. -

No results found.The implementation of the Smallholder Irrigation Support Programme focused on enhancing incomes and food and nutrition security through the rehabilitation of irrigation schemes in in seven districts in two provinces of Zimbabwe – Matabeleland South and Manicaland. The project was expected to benefit 36 000 people, 6 000 of them directly, through irrigation rehabilitation, capacity-building, agribusiness development, catchment conservation initiatives and the diffusion of technologies and innovative alternative income options. The main objective of the project was to sustainably increase the production, productivity and competitiveness of smallholder irrigated agriculture in targeted schemes in communal and old resettlement areas of Zimbabwe.

2022This year’s report should dispel any lingering doubts that the world is moving backwards in its efforts to end hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms. We are now only eight years away from 2030, but the distance to reach many of the SDG 2 targets is growing wider each year. There are indeed efforts to make progress towards SDG 2, yet they are proving insufficient in the face of a more challenging and uncertain context. The intensification of the major drivers behind recent food insecurity and malnutrition trends (i.e. conflict, climate extremes and economic shocks) combined with the high cost of nutritious foods and growing inequalities will continue to challenge food security and nutrition. This will be the case until agrifood systems are transformed, become more resilient and are delivering lower cost nutritious foods and affordable healthy diets for all, sustainably and inclusively. -
