Synopsis (short abstract) The topics in the Feasibility study model are designed for the start-up of small to medium fish farm projects. This tool will be used in the cage aquaculture licensing process in Saudi Arabia. The difference between this model and the one used for larger business models and private capital is in the depth of research and topics necessary for a large project and not applicable to a smaller one. The book is in double language and it is provided with softcopies of excel spreadsheets where forms an d business model are included. The software allows to draft the business plan returning information on breakeven point, cash flow and loan scheme.

    For a new cage culture project, it is important to know which part of the coastal zone is appropriate. Once a fish farmer selects a suitable site, it is very difficult to assess all conflicts arising with other users. This fact complicates further the selection of suitable sites for cage farming. Eastern Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia is experiencing large development activities, and most of the coastal zones are not suitable for cage farming due to the possible conflicts with other industries. S election of suitable site is the key factor for any aquaculture practice for success and sustainability. Fish cages represent installations based on offshore and must satisfy some requirements in order to maintain a good relationship with the natural environment. This publication provides wide information on the most relevant criteria that need to be taken into consideration when considering the selection of a site for cage aquaculture projects.

    Fishpen plans and construction along the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia for the Fish Farming Centre in Jeddah. Report 1985

    The Government of Saudi Arabia, assisted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, is engaged in the Fish Farming Centre Project (FI: UTFN/SAU/010/SAU), with its main activities directed to freshwater and marine aquaculture. The Government has been exploring means of reducing the country's dependance on imported fish products and is assisting in the development of aquaculture as one of the sources for the supply of fish. The Third Five-year National Plan for Fisheries Dev elopment included the construction of the Fish Farming Centre (FFC) north of Jeddah to test various approaches to aquaculture. The shallow lagoon at the Fish Farming Centre appeared to be suitable for fishpen industry development and along the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia there are numerous other shallow lagoons similar to the one near the FFC. These sites could be fully developed if the fishpen system of acquaculture proves technically and economically viable in the Red Sea. In this regard, assistance is needed in planning and installing pilot demonstration fishpens at the FFC shoreline lagoon. FAO has been consulting with ORSTOM1 regarding assistance to the project in developing the fishpen system of aquaculture at the FFC and an agreement was reached to assist the Centre in construction/installation of a pilot fishpen module at the project site in Jeddah.
