The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ FISH4ACP initiative aims to strengthen fisheries and aquaculture value chains in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. It addresses underlying challenges such as low economic performance, limited market access, and poor social and environmental sustainability. The initiative, led by the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) and funded by the EU and Germany, targets 12 member states to ensure that economic growth benefits local communities and is environmentally sustainable. In the Dominican Republic, the initiative has enhanced artisanal mahi-mahi fisheries to improve livelihoods by providing durable, energy-efficient freezers through co-financing. This helps maintain fish quality along the value chain, reduces losses, and increases profits. In the Marshall Islands, FISH4ACP aims to transform the islands into a tuna hub by increasing local containerization of tuna from 3 percent to 30 percent. This effort is expected to create over 1 000 jobs and generate USD 33 million in direct value. In Tanzania, the initiative supported fish processors by introducing solar tents for drying sardines and sprat, reducing drying time from days to hours and protecting fish from spoiling. It also provided FTT-Thiaroye ovens for smoking larger fish, which use less charcoal and improve health conditions for processors. This has resulted in a 10-percent increase in dried and smoked fish production among 100 processors, with fish processors receiving 100-percent higher prices for perch and 30 percent more for sardines and sprat.
