Synopsis (short abstract) The Food and agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) carries out regular reviews and assessments of the forestry sector at the national and sub national level. The FAO Project, "Strengthening Country Capacity in Forest Resources Assessment for Sustainable Forest Planning in the Asia Pacific Region (GCP/RAS/162/JPN)", is reviewing the status, planning efforts and databases of forests in South Asian countries. One objective of the project is to produce working papers on each of the So uth Asian countries. These working papers will provide current information on the forest resources, the eco-socio-political context, forest policy and forest planning processes. The contents of these working papers will differ due to variation in the extent and depth of the information that is available. However, an attempt has been made to provide the maximum conformity among them. These papers are mainly based on published information but creditable unpublished information that is available at the national, regional or sub-national level has also been utilized. The digital version of these papers will be available on the project web site "FAO-ICFRE.UP.NIC.IN. FAO welcomes suggestions and information that can improve the utility of these working papers.

    Food safety implications from the use of environmental inhibitors in agrifood systems 2023

    The challenge of feeding a growing world population while responding to the climate crisis, requires development of practices and technologies to increase sustainability of agrifood systems and reduce harmful effects on the environment. Among those approaches, environmental inhibitors are used to improve the production efficiency of crops and livestock while reducing emissions of greenhouse gases such as methane or limiting the loss of nitrogen from cultivated fields and pastures. An inadvertent presence of environmental inhibitors in food commodities can raise health concerns as well as trade disruption if standards are not established. Challenges related to food safety risk assessment and management of these substances include the lack of internationally harmonized maximum residue limits (MRLs), agreed definition for environmental inhibitors and insufficient safety information for some compounds. This publication provides an overview of various synthetic and biological environmental inhibitors along with an analysis of possible food safety implications from their use. Regulatory frameworks relevant for environmental inhibitors in selected countries are presented as examples of current approaches being taken at national or regional level. Finally, food safety-related knowledge gaps are discussed together with some perspectives on how to move forward.

    This compendium of policy notes is the result of cooperation between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, The World Bank and the International Rice Research Institute. Across Asia, rice is food for the largest segment of the human family. These policy notes seek to contribute to the ongoing policy dialogues and debates about rice and food security in East and Southeast Asia and to better informed decision- making. The aim of this compendium is to synthesize and reframe a large body o f recent literature into a readily-accessible format for public officials, business leaders, members of civil society and other stakeholders in the policymaking process. While the focus of the publication is on the rice sector in East and Southeast Asia, many of its key findings and conclusions will also be of interest to policymakers addressing similar challenges associated with staple food in other regions.
