No results found.The International Task Force on Harmonization and Equivalence in Organic Agriculture (ITF) was convened from 2003 to 2008 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). It served as an open-ended platform for dialogue between private and public institutions involved in trade and regulatory activities in the organic agriculture sector. The overall objective of the ITF was to facilitate trade in organic products as a response to difficulties faced by organic producers and exporters due to the hundreds of different organic regulations, standards and labels worldwide. -

No results found.The Global Organic Market Access (GOMA) project, a joint FAO, IFOAM and UNCTAD initiative, works towards reducing the barriers to trade in organic products. In seeking to reduce those barriers, GOMA promotes and facilitates harmonization and especially equivalence between countries’ systems for organic standards and conformity assessment. Between 2009 and 2012, Canada, the European Union and the United States entered into equivalence arrangements with one another relative to their regu lation of organic products and labeling. The technical details of these arrangements are public and readily accessible. As a further contribution to information about these arrangements, GOMA reviewed the processes leading to the conclusions of the equivalence negotiations including the steps involved, the identification and resolution of issues, and factors contributing to the final equivalence decisions. The aim of this study is to expand the transparency of the arrangements and di sseminate knowledge to other governments who may consider engaging in equivalence processes with their trading partners. -

No results found.The Harmonized World Soil Database version 2.0 (HWSD v2.0) is a unique global soil inventory providing information on the morphological, chemical and physical properties of soils at approximately 1 km resolution. Its main objective is to be useful for modelers and to serve as a basis for prospective studies on agroecological zoning, food security and the impacts of climate change. HWSD v2.0 also serves an educational function, illustrating the geographical distribution of soils as well as their properties globally. HWSD v2.0 is easily accessible and user-friendly. -

To inaugurate it, FAO has created a special issue of Unasylva. More than 100 international days are celebrated throughout the year, in recognition of a vast range of issues, occupations, activities and cultural values important to humanity. What better way to demonstrate the myriad functions of forests than to show that forests have a link to almost all of them? The Unasylva Editor, Andrea Perlis, has compiled a collec tion of images that illustrate these links. With only photos and the briefest of stories, the issue expresses the theme of the international year – “Forests for people” – by showing how forests are important to nearly all kinds of human activity.
