    Historically, FAO has engaged in various collaborative efforts with Indigenous Peoples and people of African descent at the global level, which have been strengthened through mutual understanding and respect. These groups are key actors in the fight against poverty and hunger, and the Organization recognizes their valuable contributions to the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In Latin America and the Caribbean, nearly half of the rural population is comprised of Indigenous Peoples and people of African descent. They face major challenges and there have been serious violations of their collective and individual rights, while their ancestral knowledge and practices are crucial for the sustainable development of the region. These issues have led to the formulation of the "FAO regional strategy for collaboration with Indigenous Peoples and People of African descent in Latin America and the Caribbean" the result of a long process of exchanges and consultation with their leaders and organizations at the local, national and regional levels, carried out almost entirely against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic since the beginning of 2020. The regional strategy is a useful tool to guide the collaborative actions in the region between FAO, the governments and Indigenous Peoples and people of African descent, with the aim of achieving more inclusive, efficient, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems.

    Overview of rural poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean

    Panorama of Rural Poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean 2018, published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), addresses the important challenges faced by the region in developing its rural territories to achieve the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, particularly SDG 1 to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. After many years of progress, poverty and extreme rural poverty in the region have started to increase again. This is worrying news for countries of the region and the international community because, if they do not return to the path of rural poverty reduction, millions of people will be excluded from the opportunity to contribute to the development of their families, communities and countries. The 33 Member States of the United Nations in the region have pledged their commitment to eradicating rural poverty by 2030 and, despite the recent trend, it is still possible to achieve this goal. This report also highlights the persistence of significant gaps between rural and urban areas, which is incompatible with sustainable and equitable development. Of the 169 targets of the Sustainable Development Goals, 132 require actions that must be carried out in rural territories.

    FAO Regional Initiatives for Latin America and the Caribbean 2016

    The Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO, is working on three Regional Initiatives to eradicate hunger, malnutrition and poverty in all countries of the region. These initiatives were agreed upon by governments, and are coordinated and multi-sector response to the main challenges that the region faces in its fight to eradicate hunger in the next decade while strengthening family farming, food systems and rural ter ritorial development, and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources, the adaptation to climate change and disaster risk management.
