Primary crop processing can create diversified incomes and employment for farmers in rural villages. Processing brings many different benefits to communities: it allows foods to be preserved and stored as a reserve against times of shortage; it helps to avoid the effects of lowered prices when seasonal gluts occur at harvest time; and it enables farmers to add value to crops that diversify and increase sources of income. The booklet is intended to create awareness among advisers, government officials, community leaders and development agency staff; on the opportunities and benefits that primary processing can bring to small-scale farmers. The booklet addresses the actions that can be taken by policy-makers and programme managers in government and non-governmental organizations to create enabling environments for smallholder farmers to diversify into primary processing.

Traditionally poultry is found in many communities the world over and can be, with adequate support, training and investment, a viable commercial enterprise for many small-scale farmers. As a start-up, poultry does not require large capital investments and labour needs are not excessive. Poultry can provide for a good source of nutrition for the farm family and an income source, which does not depend on the harvest cycle common to crops. Moreover poultry provides a number of important products, such as meat and eggs as well as important and complementary services for farm crops and other livestock. All in all poultry is an easy enterprise for small-scale farmers to diversify into. The booklet is aimed at raising awareness and promoting poultry as a business to all those who are involved in supporting small-scale farming and rural development in general.

The Women's Empowerment Farmer Business School (WE-FBS) is a gender transformative approach that aims to promote gender equality and rural women’s economic empowerment in agriculture, food security and nutrition, while increasing small-scale producers’ business profitability. It seeks to reinforce the capacities of female and male farmers to create profitable agricultural enterprises and, at the same time, transform gender relations in households, communities, and markets. This roll-up features key information about the WE-FBS approach implemented in Cambodia by FAO together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Ministry of Women's Affairs. Through a gender-focused perspective, the approach prompts men and women to reflect critically on their roles, resources, and activities in farming, and to develop strategies that are needed to maximize their commercial potential.
