Support to the Development of a Policy and Strategic Plan for the Fisheries Sector in Mauritius - TCP/MAR/3801 2024

Since 2014, the MoBEMRFS (formerly known as the Ministry of Ocean Economy) in Mauritius, has unified various ocean-related departments to maximize the ocean's potential. By 2019, recognizing the efficiency challenges of this multi-sector ministry, the Mauritian Government sought support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). With its technical support, the ministry led a participatory review process, culminating in a multi-government stakeholder workshop, which identified institutional gaps and capacity constraints hindering progress in fulfilling the ocean/blue mandate. The review concluded that while substantial economic benefits from the ocean would take decades, immediate steps could set the right course. An action plan and recommendations were made, focusing on the ministry, the broader ocean economy and capacity development. A major gap identified was the absence of an Ocean Economy Policy and Strategy. It was anticipated that a successful policy development process and the adoption of an Ocean Economy Policy would allow for the sustainable growth of the ocean economy through improved governance, enhancing the social and economic well-being of the people of Mauritius.

Support for Development of Sustainable Value Chains for Climate-Smart Agriculture - TCP/KYR/3804 2024
    Also available in:
    No results found.

The fragmented nature of agricultural value chains (VCs) in Kyrgyzstan prevents most producers from increasing farm-level productivity and expanding export potential. Other important factors behind the vulnerability of the agricultural sector are the country`s exposure to climate change, a lack of water resources and an inadequate use of the water resources that exist. These challenges are exacerbated by poor agricultural practices, with their potential to aggravate food insecurity by further decreasing overall agricultural productivity. This is especially felt by low-income smallholder families in rural communities, who depend on agricultural resources to sustain their livelihoods and whose resilience to climate change is low. Overall, underdeveloped agricultural VCs impede industrial growth and limit export potential.

Feasibility Studies for GCF Saint Lucia Proposal in Support of the Fisheries Sectoral Adaptation Strategy Action Plan (SASAP) - TCP/STL/3802 2025

Saint Lucia is highly vulnerable to climate change due to its small geographical size, high-risk location in terms of volcanic and seismic activity, tropical cyclones, oceanic forces, and economic dependence on agriculture and tourism. The impact of climate change on the country‘s marine and coastal ecosystems includes: (i) increased intensity of tropical storms, posing risks to fisherfolk; (ii) a projected decline of over 40 percent in fish catch-potential in tropical oceans by mid-century; (iii) negative effects on coastal ecosystems and aquaculture due to rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification and marine heatwaves; (iv) damage to fisheries infrastructure from rising sea levels and storm surges.
