    FAO Türkiye, in line with its overall mandate, supports the Turkish Government in close collaboration and synergy with line ministries, UN agencies, international organizations, civil society organizations, academia, and the private sector to strengthen three priority areas: food and nutrition security and safety; sustainable forest and natural resources management, including fisheries; and institutional capacity enhancement of the public and private sectors. Gender is one of the crosscutting themes that is mandatorily mainstreamed within all projects and regular work under the above-mentioned priority areas. FAO Türkiye’s actions for the implementation of gender commitments are guided by the FAO Policy on Gender Equality 2020–2030 which recognizes that persistent inequalities between women and men constitute a major obstacle to agriculture and rural development; and that eliminating these disparities is essential to building sustainable and inclusive food systems and resilient and peaceful societies. The implementation of equality goals and targets are the shared responsibility of line ministries, other government offices and civil society organizations. The National Action Plan on Women’s Empowerment 2018–2023 aims promote women’s participation in economic and social life; ensure women’s equal access to rights and opportunities; and mainstream the principle of equality between women and men into all the main state plans and programmes. In response to the challenges, FAO Türkiye cooperates with the Turkish Government to deliver a range of gender mainstreamed and women-focused actions. This compilation of practices from the field aims to raise awareness among practitioners by sharing experiences and lessons learned to develop future actions.

    Preparing the CFS Voluntary Guidelines on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in the Context of Food Security and Nutrition - GCP/GLO/493/MUL 2024

    Despite years of progress and global commitments, gender disparities and discrimination in food security persist around the world, particularly affecting women and girls in vulnerable situations. To address these issues, the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) included the development of a set of Voluntary Guidelines on Gender Equality and Women’s and Girls’ Empowerment in the context of Food Security and Nutrition in its 2020–2023 Multi-Year Programme of Work (MYPoW). The Guidelines, which were prepared under this project, aimed to (i) support CFS Member States, development partners and other stakeholders to advance the rights of women and girls, as well as gender equality and women’s and girls’ empowerment (GEWGE) in their efforts to eradicate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; and (ii) to provide guidance to countries as they work to contribute to the achievement of CFS’s vision and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2 (Zero Hunger) and 5 (Gender Equality).

    FAO Policy on Gender Equality 2020–2030 2020
    Gender equality is essential to achieve FAO’s mandate of a world free from hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. The Organization recognizes that persisting inequalities between women and men are a major obstacle to agriculture and rural development and that eliminating these disparities is essential to building sustainable and inclusive food systems and resilient and peaceful societies. In alignment with the priorities set by the international agenda, the FAO gender equality policy, first endorsed in 2012, provides the Organization with a corporate framework to orient its technical and normative work towards clear gender equality objectives relevant to its mandate. The Policy recognizes that a gender-responsive organizational environment is necessary to achieve progress towards these objectives. It, therefore, includes a set of minimum standards for gender mainstreaming to ensure that gender dimensions are adequately addressed in all organizational functions, from results-based management to staff learning and evidence generation. Recognizing that all staff has a role to play in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment, the Policy establishes a shared accountability framework that clearly outlines responsibilities for its implementation across the Organization. The revised Policy, which will be implemented over the next ten years, is a solid instrument to drive FAO’s efforts towards addressing the inequalities that are still pervasive in agriculture and food systems and to unleash the ambitions and potential of rural women and girls. An overview of women’s role in agriculture and the main constraints they face as a result of gender-based discrimination is presented in the Rationale section of this Policy, to clearly position FAO’s commitment to promote gender equality as an integral part of its mandate and contribution towards the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.
