ProjectAssessing National Food Control Systems to Enable Enhanced Food Security in the Sub-Region - TCP/SLC/3804 2024
Also available in:
No results found.Economic systems in the Bahamas and Guyana, among other countries in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), are often vulnerable to exogenous shocks such as the impact of climate change or natural diseases and disasters. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the limited level of intraregional trade among CARICOM countries and the need to address food safety and other phytosanitary issues in order to enable the safe and efficient movement of food across the subregion. Although each country has different levels of control systems and some of them have started to improve their surveillance systems, similar weaknesses were identified among countries, such as outdated food safety regulations, weak institutional capacities to perform inspections, monitoring and surveillance, poor knowledge and education among food safety professionals, a lack of cooperation among ministries or poor public awareness of food safety. -
