Synopsis (short abstract) As part of the SIDS Solutions Forum, 30-31 August 2021, FAO collected innovations and creative digital technologies that respond to local problems and challenges. Post-harvest losses, which may average 20-30 percent for some commodities, are considerable because of the lack of food processing units and lack of market for C grade agriculture commodities. This flyer presents describes processing centres that process chips from cassava, vudi (plantain) and kumala (sweet potato) and supply them to supermarkets and service stations. The food processing unit also serves as a training facility for teenaged girls, where they learn various cooking/food processing techniques, various handicrafts and other income-generating skills.

    As part of the SIDS Solutions Forum, 30-31 August 2021, FAO collected innovations and creative digital technologies that respond to local problems and challenges. Many Pacific Islands rely on imported foods, which often negatively impact the health and nutrition of the local population and which increase the occurence of obesity, diabetes and other non-communicable diseases. This flyer describes the production of flour from breadfruit, banana, taro and cassava, that can be consumed locally or exported. The producers are exploring possibilities to use the waste from food processing to make coconut wood and produce energy. The initiative is supporting sustainable livelihoods for farmers who had lost their incomes due to the COVID-19 crisis.

    As part of the SIDS Solutions Forum, 30-31 August 2021, FAO collected innovations and creative digital technologies that respond to local problems and challenges. Fiji has very low digital literacy, making online delivery a challenge for people who are not aware of, and not using, mobile technologies. However, online delivery had become strategic during the COVID-19 global pandemic. This flyer presents a system of manual ordering which allows customers to order directly from any restaurant that they chose. The restaurants slowly built and managed their online profiles. The platform has since been extended to deliver medicines, groceries and other necessities to customers.

This flyer presents a grassroots social enterprise that helps to identify sustainable economic development opportunities, such as organic farming on land in the remote islands of Fiji. It offers community training in organic and sustainable agriculture, and construction of small-scale community infrastructure. An online shopping platform has been developed to support organic farmer and producer groups.
