It presents articles and views from the FAO aquaculture programme and highlights various aspects of aquaculture as seen from the perspective of both headquarters and the field programme. Articles are contributed by FAO staff from within and outside the Department, from FAO regional offices and field projects, by FAO consultants and, occasionally, by inv itation from other sources. Book (series)The state of world fisheries and aquaculture - 1994 (SOFIA) 1995This report reviews the state of world fisheries and aquaculture in 1994, with particular attention to developments since 1989. Following consideration of world fish production and growth in demand for fish, marine fisheries production and issues are addressed in detail. Problems of fleet overcapacity and overinvestment in marine capture fisheries, leading to an unsustainable impact on resources, are highlighted. An analysis of inland capture fisheries and aquaculture is presented, noting that aquaculture will be expected to play a greater role in the food security equation in future. Fish utilization and the fish trade are reviewed. The report also provides a regional analysis of supply and demand prospects. It ends with an outlook on the prospects of satisfying global demand for food fish to the year 2010.

No results found.The utilization of sea cucumbers for human consumption and other uses has been steadily growing over the years. Up-to-date information on the present status of world sea cucumber resources and utilization is presented with special focus on those countries such as China PR, Ecuador, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and the Philippines which have been heavily engaged in the industry for decades. Information from other countries such as Cuba, Egypt, Madagascar and Tanzania, relative new comers to the sec tor, is also provided indicating to some extent the growing interest with regards to the exploitation of holothurians for the demanding Asian markets. Information on technical advances made in the artificial reproduction and farming of selected commercial species is presented. This document includes the recommendations formulated during the FAO Workshop on Advances in Sea Cucumber Aquaculture and Management (ASCAM) held in Dalian, People's Republic of China, in October 2003, along with the techn ical papers presented. The report will be useful to those international and regional development organizations and national governments who wish to prioritize their activities concerning sea cucumber conservation and exploitation.
