Synopsis (short abstract) Extensive pastoral production covers some 25 percent of the world's land area and produces 10 percent of the meat used for human consumption, while supporting some 20 million pastoral households. Pastoral production is split between the extensive enclosed systems that are typical of North America, Australia and parts of South America, and the open access systems of Africa, the Andes, Asia and Siberia, which are still largely the province of "traditional" producers. The breakdown of the command e conomies of Central Asia probably increased the numbers of households depending on pastoral production in the last decade of the twentieth century. Although pastoralists, along with foragers (with whom they have much in common), represent an almost archetypically vulnerable social group, donor interest in the sector is minimal.

    West Kordofan State has been affected by the continuing war in South Kordofan, the Darfur conflict and the civil war in South Sudan. The secession of South Sudan worsened the predicament of nomads in the area, as movements to the country were blocked. As a result, animals find themselves concentrated in an arrow area with limited resources during the dry season. Diseases that are preventable by vaccination are still considered major threats to animal production. Taking into account the lack of veterinary services in the area for a number of years, which has led to the spread of dangerous transboundary animal diseases, West Kordofan is considered a serious focus for the spread of diseases, undermining Sudan’s role as an important livestock-exporting agent in the region. In this context, the project provided an opportunity to build the capacity of both veterinarians and veterinary institutions

    Transhumant grazing systems in temperate Asia 2003

    This book brings together studies by national scientists on traditional transhumant grazing systems, emphasizing grazing management and overall land use. Focus is on two zones in temperate Asia: the Himalaya-Hindu Kush and the colder areas of China, Mongolia and parts of Central Asia. Under prevailing conditions, mobile herding is the only sustainable way the population can make best use of the natural resources, but systems were dislocated by collectivization. In the Himalaya there is conflict between herders and sedentary groups. While poor pasture condition is a major constraint, the main problems are socio-economic and institutional and relate to land tenure and grazing rights. Fodder crops are, however, of great interest for settled groups who use the same pastures. Focus on technical solutions, herder training and participatory approaches should be within the context of- political decisions.
