DocumentTechnical reportIntegrated Poverty Assessment of Livestock Promotion: An Example From Viet Nam
Pro-Poor Livestock Policy Initiative: A Living from Livestock
2010Also available in:
No results found. In this report, we apply a suite of new data and empirical methods to demonstrate how livestock can make a significant contribution to the livelihoods of the poor. This potential is far from being realized, however, and there is much wider scope for the promotion of livestock, especially among poor rural communities. Using new techniques, we show how information distilled from a variety of sources can be combined in an empirical approach termed ‘integrated poverty assessment of livestock promoti on’ (IPALP). This technique elucidates the role of livestock in poverty alleviation and economic growth generally, strengthening the basis of evidence for policies that can better support pro-poor development. Using a very detailed new national Social Accounting Matrix and a dynamic Calibrated General Equilibrium Model, policy experiments are conducted to assess the impact of an economy-wide policy of trade liberalization, with and without concomitant livestock promotion. Our results reveal the complex indirect linkages between globalization and rural poverty alleviation. Generally speaking, the poor may not benefit directly from traditional export oriented development strategies, but by marketing food to rising income urbanites, they can participate in national growth more effectively. -
Book (series)Technical reportAgricultural growth and poverty reduction – the rapidly increasing role of smallholder livestock
International Workshop on “Livestock and Livelihoods: Challenges and Opportunities for Asia in the Emerging Market Environment”
2003Also available in:
No results found. The smallholder livestock sector is not playing its full role in employment growth and poverty reduction because governments are not diagnosing the critical needs for public goods to complement private activities and ensuring that the critical needs are met. The loss in welfare from this neglect is immense. -
Book (series)Technical reportPoverty Alleviation, Environment and Public Health: Developing Enabling Policy Environments for the Livestock Sector 2003
Also available in:
No results found. One of the major foci of the FAO PPLP Initiative is strengthening the capacity of national governments’ to develop livestock policy that both responds to the needs of stakeholders and also reflects the resources and requirements of relevant state institutions. This report is on a workshop that focussed on building livestock policy capacity in the Mekong countries. The report outlines the aims, process and outputs from the workshop entitled ‘Poverty Alleviation, Environment and Public health: Dev eloping Enabling Policy Environments for the Livestock Sector’, held in Phnom Penh from June 18-20, 2003.

Book (series)Technical studyThe impact of climate variability and extremes on agriculture and food security - An analysis of the evidence and case studies
Background paper for The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2018
2020Also available in:
No results found.Global climate studies show that not only temperatures are increasing and precipitation levels are becoming more varied, all projections indicate these trends will continue. It is therefore imperative that we understand changes in climate over agricultural areas and their impacts on agriculture production and food security. This study presents new analysis on the impact of changing climate on agriculture and food security, by examining the evidence on recent climate variability and extremes over agricultural areas and the impact of these on agriculture and food security. It shows that more countries are exposed to increasing climate variability and extremes and the frequency (the number of years exposed in a five-year period) and intensity (the number of types of climate extremes in a five-year period) of exposure over agricultural areas have increased. The findings of this study are compelling and bring urgency to the fact that climate variability and extremes are proliferating and intensifying and are contributing to a rise in global hunger. The world’s 2.5 billion small-scale farmers, herders, fishers, and forest-dependent people, who derive their food and income from renewable natural resources, are most at risk and affected. Actions to strengthen the resilience of livelihoods and food systems to climate variability and extremes urgently need to be scaled up and accelerated. -
Book (stand-alone)Manual / guideRecarbonizing global soils – A technical manual of recommended management practices
Volume 5 - Forestry, wetlands, urban soils – Practices overview
2021Also available in:
No results found.During the last decades, soil organic carbon (SOC) attracted the attention of a much wider array of specialists beyond agriculture and soil science, as it was proven to be one of the most crucial components of the earth’s climate system, which has a great potential to be managed by humans. Soils as a carbon pool are one of the key factors in several Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal 15, “Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss” with the SOC stock being explicitly cited in Indicator 15.3.1. This technical manual is the first attempt to gather, in a standardized format, the existing data on the impacts of the main soil management practices on SOC content in a wide array of environments, including the advantages, drawbacks and constraints. This manual presents different sustainable soil management (SSM) practices at different scales and in different contexts, supported by case studies that have been shown with quantitative data to have a positive effect on SOC stocks and successful experiences of SOC sequestration in practical field applications. Volume 5 includes 24 practices that have a direct impact on SOC sequestration and maintenance in forestry, wetlands and urban soils. -
