Synopsis (short abstract) The area available for cultivation is the area that is not damaged and not subject to access restrictions. The damaged area is assessed based on the baseline cropland dataset for 2023, and the cropland damage assessment as of 30 March 2025 by FAO and UNOSAT. The area accessible is determined by excluding the so-called “no-go” areas in place (OCHA, April 2025), and the areas subject to evacuation orders as of 12 April 2025.

    A cropland category mask was prepared using very high-resolution satellite data from SPOT, WorldView-2 and Pléiades multispectral and panchromatic imagery, along with Sentinel-2 to analyse the damage to cropland. Sentinel-2 data from the month of April from 2018 to 2024 was used as a baseline for comparison with April 2025 data conduct cropland change analysis of the cropland category mask area.

    Utilising a baseline greenhouse layer prepared by FAO in 2021 and very high resolution satellite imagery*, UNOSAT updated the baseline for 2023, prior to the recent conflict escalation, and conducted an assessment of the number and area of greenhouses in the Gaza Strip. A thorough evaluation of damage to greenhouses was performed, comparing pre-conflict imagery with very high-resolution WorldView-2 imagery from 18 April 2025 and WorldView-3 imagery from 28 April 2025.
