Synopsis (short abstract) Fisheries and aquaculture products are currently the most traded animal protein in value, with a diverse range of product types, resulting in a global and complex value chain. Fisheries and aquaculture trade flows generally follow a supply pattern from developing to developed countries, primarily to cover insufficient local production or to meet a specific demand related to the multitude of species not produced locally. The sustainability of fisheries resources is crucial to billions of people's livelihoods, food security, and nutrition. The sector has grown significantly, increasing overall production, trade, and consumption. National governments and international organizations invest significant resources in ensuring the long-term viability of fish resources. FAO Members adopted the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF) in 1995. The CCRF was a visionary instrument, which was approved the same year the WTO was established, addressing certification, social responsibility, ecolabeling, non-trade barriers, and other aspects involving trade and sustainability in its three dimensions. More recently, the FAO Voluntary Guidelines for Catch Documentation Schemes (CDS) developed a set of basic guidelines to assist countries in determining whether fish originated from catches taken following applicable national, regional, and international conservation and management measures throughout the supply chain. Furthermore, countries implemented traceability programs that required importers to provide and report data on various fish species from the point of harvest to the point of entry. This Working Session will provide a forum to discuss how international instruments and national programs can help to promote more sustainable trade in fisheries and aquaculture products. It will also give national examples on how the implementation of traceability programs and international instruments could contribute to more sustainable fish trade.

    “FAO Instruments supporting the Sustainability of Traded Fish and Fisheries Products” A variety of instruments have been established within the framework of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, assisting fishers, industry, and governments in the area of management, operations, aquaculture development, coastal area management and post-harvest and trade. Among FAO instruments, the set of International Plan of Actions (IPOA) covers a wide area of fish-related issues like sharks (IPOA-sharks), fishing capacity (IPOA-capacity), seabirds (IPOA-seabirds) and IUU fishing (IPOA-IUU). The importance of small-scale fishers and developing countries at a global level in producing and supplying fish and fishery products put them at the forefront in facing specific trade measures. In this regard, the FAO Voluntary Guidelines for Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF) focuses on integrated and participatory approaches for small-scale fishers to reduce any associated barriers.
