Synopsis (short abstract) This study tour, organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization with UN-Habitat and UNDP, supports the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals through peer learning and city-to-city cooperation. Hosted by the Municipality of Mafra, Portugal, it brings together local authorities from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia working on Voluntary Local Reviews.Over three days, participants explore Mafra’s practical experiences in SDG implementation, including food waste reduction, biodiversity planning, wastewater reuse, and inclusive governance. Site visits highlight local initiatives such as the bioresidue separation program, food redistribution through Refood Mafra, and sustainable budgeting aligned with SDGs.The tour promotes knowledge exchange, capacity building, and collaboration across municipalities, contributing to global goals related to hunger, sustainable cities, responsible consumption, water, and partnerships.

By focusing on the development of Voluntary Local Reviews, the event fosters peer learning, regional collaboration, and practical knowledge exchange.Participants will share experiences from cities such as Mafra, Dushanbe, and Niš, showing how local reviews can support inclusive planning, stronger governance, and improved monitoring. A dedicated session is planned for presenting the role of cities in transforming agrifood systems, particularly in reducing food loss and waste.

    2030 is seven years away and we are far from achieving the SDGs. Multiple crises are affecting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Local governments play a key role in piloting transformative actions that can accelerate SDG achievement. The aim of the side event is to share knowledge and tools to support local governments in SDG achievement, and to showcase key transformative actions implemented by local governments in ECA in support of agri-food systems transformation, as a key SDG accelerator.

    Enhancing resilient livelihoods and food security of host communities and Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon through the promotion of sustainable agricultural development - Output 2 2023

    FAO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture in Jordan, and in partnership with IFAD and WFP, launched the project entitled “Enhancing resilient livelihoods and food security of host communities and Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon through the promotion of sustainable agricultural development”. This project is funded by the European Union, through the EU Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian crisis, the EU Madad Fund. The project addresses the reduced livelihood and food security levels in Jordan resulting from the crisis in Syria. It offers to tackle its negative impact on both refugees from Syria and host communities through support to the agriculture sector. This will be done by improving the agricultural productivity and farmers’ incomes, in addition to creating job opportunities for both host communities and displaced Syrians. The project will also promote social protection mechanisms for the benefit of the host farming community. The project also aims at creating adequate agriculture production support systems for vulnerable smallholders that support good agriculture practices and timely response to shocks and rehabilitate the capacity of the agriculture extension systems to be able to respond to the increasing demand for support due to the impact of the Syrian crisis. In addition, the project will support vulnerable smallholders and small family-based agri-food enterprises to increase the productivity and financial feasibility. The brochure will ensure the visibility of FAO and the partners, including the donor. It will provide information on the project and output 2.
