    In technology-enhanced learning, metadata interoperability has been identified as an important issue. It allows not only the exchange and preservation of crucial learning and teaching information (such as competency profiles, learning activities, and descriptions of learning resources), but also its future re-use among a large number of different systems and repositories. In the field of agricultural education and training, learning technologies’ specifications and standards have not yet b een widely adopted. Few initiatives have reported implementing them, and in most cases only to describe learning resources by using IEEE Learning Object Metadata (LOM), Dublin Core (DC) or a combination of the two. This results in introduction of dispersed efforts and systems with significant differences between them. In this paper, we present results of a study aiming at the review and assessment of implementations of metadata standards in agricultural learning repositories. More specif ically, it assesses the current status of development and implementation of metadata application profiles based on standards such as IEEE LOM and DC.

    Metadata interoperability allows the exchange and preservation of crucial learning and teaching information, as well as its future reuse among a large number of different systems and repositories. This paper introduces work around metadata interoperability that has taken place in the context of the Agricultural Learning Repositories Task Force (AgLR-TF), an international community of the stakeholders that are involved in agricultural learning repositories. It particularly focuses on a review and assessment of metadata application profiles that are currently implemented in agricultural learning repositories. The results of this study can be found useful by who are designing, implementing and operating agricultural learning repositories, facilitating thus metadata interoperability in this application field.

    Integration of language attributes in Metadata and Customization for Domain Specific Repositories 2010

    The paper presents a system for customized metadata facility adapted to expose domain specific metadata along with language attributes. Quality metadata is crucial for efficient information retrieval. Use of standard and common vocabulary leads to normalization of differences that arise due geographic, cultural, domain specific environments even amongst digital libraries with same or similar collection scopes. The present work demonstrates implementation of language attributes (which is missing in the official version of DSpace) for metadata elements. As a case study we demonstrate the AGRIS (Agricultural Information System) application profile customized for metadata in DSpace repositories. It serves as a full text content management platform for the agricultural community and especially the languagewise disparate and geographically distributed AGRIS network through enriched domain metadata in standard format for the description, management and better metadat a sharing.
