Since the birth of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 and especially after the adoption of reform and the open-door policy in the late 1970s, aquaculture has achieved remarkable success. The inland aquaculture activities are carried out in ponds, lakes, reservoirs, rivers and paddy fields. The country has accorded high priority to the development of aquaculture. This publication describes the fisheries and aquaculture institutions and extension services in China, as well as the production, marketing, economics and socio-economic benefits of aquaculture extension policies, plans and programmes. Progress, constraints and potentials are also examined. -
