Synopsis (short abstract) The World Bank/FAO report, The Sunken Billions, argues that world capture fishery resources are performing far below their economic potential. The cost to the world economy is in the order of US$50 billion per annum in forgone resource rent. Case studies commissioned by the World Bank and FAO support these conclusions and show that the economic overexploitation of capture fishery resources is spread throughout the world, in both developed and developing fishing states. The question n ow to be addressed is what needs to be done to reverse the situation. It is clear that, in order for world capture fishery resources to realize their full economic potential, there will need to be a programme of massive resource investment in the overexploited fish stocks. Establishing effective capture fishery resource investment programmes will be challenging, particularly for shared stocks in the high seas. That said, several of the case studies provide encouraging lessons with ex amples of highly successful fish stock rebuilding programmes.

    This report presents the results of an analysis of economic rent from roundwood production in Suriname. It starts by describing the concept of economic rent: what it means; how it is calculated; and why it is so important. it then presents the results of the economic rent analysis and presents some recommendations for forest charges in Suriname. Later sections describe some ways to improve the efficiency and profitability of the forestry sector in Suriname and some ways that current constraints may be overcome.

    The Regional Workshop on the Effects of Globalization and Deregulation on Marine Capture Fisheries in Asia and the Pacific was hosted by the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) and organized by the Fishery Industries Division of FAO in cooperation with the Asia Pacific Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (APRACA). The findings and recommendations of the Workshop suggest that many countries in Asia and the Pacific benefited and expect to continue to benefit from globalization and deregulation. These benefits include improved quality and better access of their fishery products to markets in other countries within and outside of Asia and the Pacific, increased export earnings, better exchange of technology, increased productivity and efficiency and better supply of fishery products for local populations through liberalization of imports of fishery products. Negative effects of globalization and deregulation identified in the Workshop included increased competition for the small-scale do mestic fisheries sector mainly through import of low priced fish products. It was felt that special measures are needed to protect and strengthen this sector. These included technical assistance, training and investment support as well as possibly fiscal measures and economic incentives.

    This document contains supplementary material to the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Technical Paper titled “Assessing water availability and related economic social and nutritional contributions provided by inland capture fishery and aquaculture: an indicator-based framework” and shows results of the implementation of the designed framework of indicators in 18 selected countries in Africa and Asia. Fifteen indicators assess the water availability, economic, social and nutritional dimensions measu ring the economic, social and nutritional contributions per unit of available water resource provided by the inland fishery sector to human well-being. Each country profile provides detailed information on the sources used to compile each indicator together with the rationale used to assemble the indicator values. Important background of information on existing data sources related to the indicator framework is provided and the document identifies existing data gaps and priorities for further in vestigation.
