Book (stand-alone)Report of the 2011 Session of the Joint EIFAAC/ICES Working Group on Eels, Lisbon, Portugal, 5-9 September 2011
Lisbon, Portugal. 5-9 September 2011

No results found. This report summarizes the presentations, discussions and recommendations of the 2011 session of the Joint EIFAAC/ICES Working Group on Eel which took place in Lisbon, Portugal, hosted by the University of Lisbon (Faculdade de Ciências, Univer-sidade de Lisboa), from 5 to 9 September 2011. In this section, the main outcomes from the report are summarized, a forward focus is proposed in the light of observed declines in many Anguillid stocks and the imple-mentation of the EU Regulation for the Re covery of the Eel Stock and the main rec-ommendations are presented by WGEEL. The Working Group in 2011, along with Study Group on International Post-Evaluation on Eels (SGIPEE), has focused on six main themes, updating the recruit-ment and stocking time-series, including a power analysis on the ability to detect a change in recruitment or silver eel output, a discussion on biological reference points and setting reference biomass and mortality limits, providing support for local popu-lation ass essments especially in describing anthropogenic mortalities, updating the EEQD and making preliminary assessments of spawner quality and making some observation on eel and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. The objective of eel stock assessment is to quantify the biomass of silver eel escaping in order to assess compliance with the EU target of 40% of pristine biomass without anthropogenic mortality. Given that it will be impractical to directly assess silver eel biomass and mortality in m any rivers, yellow eel stock assessment will also be re-quired. In conjunction with SGIPEE and pilot projects to estimate potential and ac-tual escapement of silver eel (POSE), the Working Group has identified a number of areas where gaps in knowledge existed (i.e. silver eel assessment, yellow to silver transformation, quantification of habitat) and focused on these in order to provide support for local stock assessments. To fill the gap between implemented reductions in mortality and the subse quent changes in silver eel biomass, it is also recommended that a measure of lifetime anthropogenic mortality be determined. -
Book (stand-alone)Report of the 2009 Session of the Joint EIFAC/ICES Working Group on Eels, Göteborg, Sweden, 7-12 September 2009 2010

No results found. This Report summarizes the presentations, discussions and recommendations of the 2009 session of the Joint EIFAC/ICES Working Group on Eels which took place in Göteborg, Sweden, hosted by the Swedish Board of Fisheries, from 7 to 12 September 2009. In this section, the main outcomes from the report are summarized, a forward focus is proposed in the light of the EU Regulation for the Recovery of the Eel Stock and the main recommendations are presented. It is clear from this Report that recrui tment is still low and in many time-series it continues to fall, the stock is in decline and urgent protection measures are required. Significant pressures have been placed on the scientific and technical system to support the delivery of Eel Management Plans by December 2008. This challenging situation has continued though 2009 with the evaluations of submitted plans taking place. The evaluation of eel management plans has been carried out by the ICES Secretariat as a technical evaluation and r eview service. Eel experts from the ICES communities, especially the joint EIFAC/ICES Working Group on Eel, have been involved on an ad hoc technical/expert consultant basis. -
Book (stand-alone)Report of the 2012 Session of the Joint EIFAAC/ICES Working Group on Eels, Copenhagen, Denmark, 3–9 September 2012

No results found. The Joint EIFAAC/ICES WGEEL met in 2012 in ICES HQ, Copenhagen, Denmark. ICES has provided advice on eel since 1999. Following long-term declines in recruits (e.g. glass eel since 1980, yellow eel since 1960s) and landings (since 1960s), the urgent compilation of a management plan was recommended, aiming at a recovery of the stock. Suggested eel-specific management targets were based on precautionary reasoning and general considerations. In 2007, the EU adopted the Eel Regulation, which led to t he development of Eel Management Plans by 2009. Implementation of these plans has generated much more data, and further research studies have been executed. Reporting to the EU in 2012 by Member States on their post-evaluation of the implementation of the first three years of the Regulation will enable the first compilation of the implemented management actions and the stock indicators. This should facilitate the planned post-evaluation by ICES of the international eel stock. The Terms of Refere nce for the 2012 WGEEL was framed with this approach in mind. The WGEEL meeting was organized on a general agreed agenda and task based meetings with discussion plenary sessions. The report comprises six main chapters in two sections, the first section addresses data, trends and information for current advice in four chapters, the second section addresses International Stock Assessment, the planning for the review of reported local stock assessments and stock indicators, delivered by EU Member S tates, including a preliminary assessment of the information currently available to the WGEEL. A final third section in the report summaries other areas of WGEEL activity.
