Synopsis (short abstract) The objectives in producing this document were to record the present state and conditions of the fisheries and aquaculture sector in the Republic of Moldova, as well as to point out those entry points that could ensure its further sustainable development. Data and information were provided by two professional teams headed by Dr Elena Zubcov, Head of the Laboratory of Hydrobiology and Ecotoxicology, Academy of Sciences of Moldova, and Dr Galina Curcubet, Director of the Chisinau Branch of the Sta te Enterprise on Research and Production of Water Bio-resources Aquaculture – Moldova. The teams embraced the envisaged themes including the physical, social, economic and administrative background and structure of the sector. This review is based on the results obtained from a range of research projects conducted by the Institute of Zoology, and funded by the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. These projects were: • The study of biodiversity, functioning of hydrobiocenoses for determining the carr ying capacity of aquatic ecosystems both fluvial and lacustrine, in dependence on natural and anthropogenic factors (Project No. 06.411.012F). • Estimating the role of groups of terrestrial, aquatic animals, zoo- and phyto parasites of economic interest, the development of measures of monitoring, sustainable utilization of useful species and control of harmful once (Project No. 06.411.014A). • Revealing the water quality and the state of aquatic ecosystems in Lower Prut (Project No. 09.832.08.07 A). • Regularities of intraspecific variability of the structure and dynamics of population of cyprinids (the example species Abramis brama L.) in Moldova and the European part of Russia (Project No. 08.820-04-22 RF). • CRDF-MRDA Assessment of current status of biodiversity and water quality in Dniester River (Project No. MBI-3002). • Elaboration of growth technology of Kefal pelingas (Project No. BPP-03-06). In the preparation of this document, FAO guidelines on the elaboration of similar fishe ries and aquaculture country reviews were followed. The review has been endorsed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry of the Republic of Moldova, which is the ministry responsible for fisheries and aquaculture.

    The present document is a follow-up to previous FAO technical assistance efforts in the sustainable development and management of the fishery and aquaculture sector in Georgia. It aims to call attention to and provide evidences of the fact that fisheries and aquaculture have substantial development potentials in Georgia. The country is rich in both marine and inland water resources, but the potentials of the fishery and aquaculture sector are far from being exploited. The country could multiply its fish production through improvements in the administration and supervision of marine fisheries and through enhanced implementation of the rules and regulations of inland fisheries together with a reliable culture based fisheries supported by well managed hatcheries. The review emphasizes that efficient and sustainable exploitation of potentials requires the concerted and coordinated attention and actions of decision makers in the government administration and all actual and potential s takeholders of the Georgian fisheries and aquaculture sector. In order to achieve a tangible improvement, the following entry points have been identified and actions proposed: In the field of marine capture fisheries quick action is needed on assistance, to obtain export certification for fresh and processed Black Sea anchovy and to upgrade and optimize the fisheries inspection. Facilitating investment loans for the fishing fleet is another urgent task. The most obvious entry points for the deve lopment of inland fisheries and aquaculture are: finalization of the databases of surface water resources, survey of fish farm facilities, establishment of a reliable fish seed production network and rehabilitation of selected Sturgeon Hatcheries. In sector management, an updated administrative structure and upgraded Georgian fisheries laws and regulations could fix existing loopholes and provide for sustainable development and responsible management of aquatic resources. The review also pres ents the widest possible range of data and information in order to facilitate the identification and utilization of further areas of fisheries and aquaculture development in the country. To that end, detailed lists of actual and potential natural and social resources are presented and discussed, together with the most important determining factors of sector administration, management and business performance.

    The present document is an update and presentation of the natural, economic and social resources for sustainable development and management of the fishery and aquaculture sector in Armenia. It aims to call attention to, and provide evidence of, the fact that fisheries and aquaculture have substantial development potentials in Armenia. The country is rich in inland water resources, but the potentials of the fishery and aquaculture sector are far from being exploited. Better utilization of water resources could be achieved through improved coordination and administration, including the implementation of rules and regulations of inland fisheries together with the enlargement of national and international markets. The review recommends better fisheries utilization of natural and artificial water bodies, as well as suggesting coordinated joint action of government authorities and fish producers, regarding the certification of fish and fishery products to European Union m arkets. The most obvious entry points for the development of inland fisheries and aquaculture are: planned fisheries management of natural waters, better utilization of underground water resources, improved governmental support through improved administration and more intensive backing of the fisheries and aquaculture sector. The review also presents a wide range of available data and information in order to facilitate the identification and utilization of further areas of fisheries and aquaculture development in the country. For this reason, detailed lists of actual and potential natural and social resources are presented and discussed, together with important determining factors of sector administration, management and business performance.
