Synopsis (short abstract) The catfish aquaculture value chain in Nigeria is one of 12 value chains competitively selected from over 70 proposals worldwide for support from the FISH4ACP programme. This summary report presents the outputs of analysis and design work completed during 2021 and 2022. It includes a functional analysis of the VC, an assessment of its sustainability and resilience, an upgrading strategy to which the FISH4ACP programme will contribute, and a plan for full implementation from 2023.

This report presents the results of the value chain analysis of the catfish aquaculture value chain in Nigeria from 2021-2022 by the value chain development programme FISH4ACP. This report contains a functional analysis of the value chain, assesses its sustainability and resilience, develops an upgrading strategy and an implementation plan to which FISH4ACP will contribute.FISH4ACP is an initiative of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) aimed at making fisheries and aquaculture value chains in twelve OACPS member countries more sustainable. It contributes to food and nutrition security, economic prosperity and job creation by ensuring the economic, social and environmental sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific.FISH4ACP is implemented by FAO with funding from the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

This qualitative study was developed under the Empowering women and boosting livelihoods through agricultural trade: Leveraging the AfCFTA programme, co-implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Trade Centre (ITC). It seeks to assess gender dynamics along the fisheries and aquaculture value chains in Ghana and Nigeria, focusing particularly on women’s roles, barriers and trade potential. This report also provides gender-specific recommendations to address the identified challenges and enhance women’s trade potential in the selected regional value chain in Ghana and Nigeria.

This Fisheries and Aquaculture Technical Paper presents the findings of a value chain analysis of the aquafeed (aquatic animal feed) sub-sector for the striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) farming in Viet Nam, including a review of aquafeed regulatory framework in the country. The striped catfish (pangasius) production sub-sector is characterized by intensive pond production technology and high-quality production inputs. In 2014, annual production of pangasius was 1 143 797 tonnes. The key actors in the value chain comprise input suppliers, including feed ingredients suppliers, feed manufacturers, and hatchery operators (seed producers), along with fingerling and grow-out farmers, fish processors, exporters, consumers and service providers. In recent years, large-scale vertically integrated enterprises have started to emerge that operate along the entire value chain, and these now dominate many areas of production.
