No results found.The project “Support to agricultural livelihoods of rural and peri-urban returnees and communities in Nineveh Governorate, Iraq” was implemented from June 2019 to June 2023. The project was developed in response to the destruction of human, financial, physical and natural capital caused by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) conflict (2014-2017) in the Governorate of Nineveh.The evaluation found that the project is strongly aligned with national priorities, FAO's strategic objectives and the needs of Iraqi in peri-urban and rural communities. The project demonstrated elements of the humanitarian–development–peace (HDP) nexus, reinforcing national systems and likely enhancing social cohesion within communities. The project successfully introduced sustainable agricultural practices, including alternative fodder crops and livestock interventions as part of the dairy value chain, contributing to economic benefits for smallholder farmers and empowerment of women in rural communities. However, external and internal challenges persisted. In addition, the project successfully trained the Directorate of Agriculture, through its extension workers, and farmers in Nineveh Governorate, transferring knowledge. Moreover, efforts were made towards sustainability through strengthening partnerships, enhancing knowledge of stakeholders, developing a sense of ownership of the project, replicating a similar project in Iraq and contributing towards a more conducive environment. Despite these efforts, limited access to financial resources and environmental factors pose challenges to sustainability.Recommendations include continued emphasis on value chain development, enhanced monitoring efforts, and further implementation of the HDP approach to ensure sustained project impact and resilience in a fragile context. -

No results found.This fact sheet provides a detailed description on the intended support to the crop sector under FAO Iraq EU funded project "Support to agricultural livelihoods of rural and peri-urban returnees and communities in Ninewah Governorate, Iraq". Ninewa Governorate is famous for grain (i.e. wheat and barley), legumes (i.e. chickpeas and lentils) and winter/summer vegetable crops. Vegetable produces in Ninewa will be supported through provision of agricultural inputs and improvement of skills and knowledge to improving the capabilities, skills and knowledge of producers, with the aim of improving productivity and increasing the income of farmers. -

This fact sheet provides a detailed description on the intended support to the livestock sector under FAO Iraq EU funded project "Support to agricultural livelihoods of rural and peri-urban returnees and communities in Ninewah Governorate, Iraq". Livestock is a major contributor to income in Iraq, and Ninewa governorate is a major reservoir of livestock in Iraq, mainly of sheep production. Beneficiaries of this intervention will benefit from the provision of veterinary services, processing and marketing, development of fodder crops and other feeding technologies, and training to strengthen their capacity in improved livestock management and hygiene. Extension agents from Ministry of Agriculture, private veterinarians and staff from NGOs and other organizations working with other livestock projects will also benefit from the training sessions and extension manuals and leaflets produced by the project.

No results found.The project aimed to build climate resilience in the beleaguered fisheries sector of Malawi, especially among the heavily overfished riparian communities of Lake Malombe. Its core objectives expanded climate information access, established supportive policies and regulations, and built local capacities to improve resilience in this highly vulnerable sector. The Department of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development was the national executing partner. At the district level, the main partner was the District Fisheries Office. -
Book (stand-alone)Technical bookTracking progress on food and agriculture-related SDG indicators 2025 2025The achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the 2030 Agenda is now more crucial than ever, as the target date draws near and many goals are still far from being achieved. Countries across the globe are grappling with an array of complex and interconnected challenges, including ongoing conflicts, health crises, biodiversity loss, the escalating impacts of climate change, and political and economic tensions. FAO is the custodian agency for 22 SDG indicators spanning Goals 2, 5, 6, 12, 14 and 15. Among its key responsibilities as a custodian agency is to curate the indicator methodologies, collect, harmonize and compile data from countries, as well as disseminate and analyse data at global level. This report provides an analysis of regional and global figures and trends for the 22 SDG indicators under FAO's responsibility, thus fulfilling one of FAO’s key roles as custodian agency. The world is at a moderate distance from achieving roughly half of the food and agriculture-related SDG indicators under FAO custodianship; one-quarter of the indicators are close to being achieved, whereas another quarter remains far or very far from being achieved. Meanwhile, progress since 2015 has deteriorated on over three-fifths of the indicators; one indicator has stagnated; whereas only the remaining one-third of indicators have registered an improvement or slight improvement.
