Synopsis (short abstract) To date, African Swine Fever (ASF), a major challenge to sustainable pig production globally, has resulted in billions of dollars in losses in Africa, Europe and Asia. Proper response to outbreaks of this devastating disease is a key to its management. To address this, animal health authorities must have access to reliable information that can aid in complex decision-making before and during outbreaks. Geographic information system (GIS) technology is an effective and flexible tool that can strongly help competent agencies with disease management and intervention planning. This handbook focuses on promoting the use of GIS in managing ASF and serves as a reference guide that outlines the benefits of GIS and the essential steps for effective data collection and organization. It offers practical examples of GIS in action, richly illustrating population distribution, disease occurrence mapping, and risk assessment and visualization. While avoiding complex technical details, it gives extensive guidance on preparing essential datasets and organizing them into a functional GIS. Designed as an entry-level resource, the handbook bridges basic ASF epidemiology and GIS. It is aimed at officials, animal health professionals, pig farmers, wildlife managers, hunters, GIS experts, students, and other stakeholders involved in the global prevention and control of ASF. It encourages these individuals to develop their own decision-support GIS to improve ASF management and reduce its impact both in domestic pigs and wild boar.

    African swine fever (ASF) is a devastating haemorrhagic viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs of all ages and sexes. This disease causes massive economic losses, threatens food security and trade, and presents a serious challenge for the pig production sector in affected countries. ASF also threatens the biodiversity conservation of several Asiatic wild Suidae. Since ASF was first introduced in Georgia in 2007, the disease has spread to many countries in Europe, Asia and the Pacific, and in 2021, it was detected in the Caribbean states of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, both in the Americas. In much of its Euro-Asiatic range, the African swine fever virus (ASFV) infects wild boar, which sometimes act as the main – if not the only – epidemiological reservoir of the infection, keeping it in the environment regardless of the presence of infected domestic pigs. The presence of the virus in wild boar populations is a continuous health threat for the sympatric domestic pig population, posing a challenge for veterinary and wildlife services that have had little success in attempting to eradicate infections among wildlife, especially in the absence of an effective vaccine. Finally, areas in which ASFV is detected in wild boar remain infected for at least one year after the last recorded case. This is a much longer period than that of domestic animals and puts a strain on the services involved, requiring a considerable amount of work and human and financial resources. The second edition of the handbook provides insights on surveillance and disease management in wild boar based on experiences with ASFV eradication in Belgium and Czechia, as well as other recent experiences in the prevention and control of the disease in wild boar in Europe.

    FAO is spearheading an international effort to step up the fight against African swine fever (ASF), a deadly pig disease that can devastate livelihoods and food security. Small-scale farmers are worst hit by the effects of ASF, which also threatens international trade. By developing a Global Platform for African swine fever and other important swine diseases, FAO and its partners plan to increase knowledge on ASF and its ramifications as well as promote collaboration among governments and pig pr oducers to reduce global risk. From 5 to 7 November 2013, experts from Africa, China, Europe, Japan and the United States of America gathered at FAO headquarters to discuss progress on the Global Platform in an effort to better coordinate ASF prevention and control. The Global Platform will bring together the private sector (e.g. pig producers, farmer and veterinarian associations, pharmaceutical companies), international and regional organizations, research institutions, government and non-gove rnmental organizations. The goal will be to shape a common agenda against ASF and other important pig diseases.
