Book (series)Measuring capacity in fisheries 2003
Also available in:
No results found. This Fisheries Technical Paper contains some selected papers originally presented at the FAO Technical Consultation on the Measurement of Fishing Capacity held in Mexico City in 1999. The 23 papers are presented in four parts. The first part includes papers addressing theoretical considerations and definitions of capacity. The second part presents case studies outlining the existing practice in some member countries. These case studies do not necessarily represent best practice, but pr ovide an overview of current practice. The third section includes papers that outline alternative methods for deriving output-based measures of capacity. In particular, the papers describe the data envelopment analysis and peak-to-peak techniques. The methods are applied to a number of fisheries for example purposes. The last section contains papers that outline alternative methods for assessing input-based measures of capacity. These include estimation of fishing power, hold capacity and bioeconomic modelling to determine optimal fleet sizes. -

No results found. The Regional Workshop on the Effects of Globalization and Deregulation on Marine Capture Fisheries in Asia and the Pacific was hosted by the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) and organized by the Fishery Industries Division of FAO in cooperation with the Asia Pacific Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (APRACA). The findings and recommendations of the Workshop suggest that many countries in Asia and the Pacific benefited and expect to continue to benefit from globalization and deregulation. These benefits include improved quality and better access of their fishery products to markets in other countries within and outside of Asia and the Pacific, increased export earnings, better exchange of technology, increased productivity and efficiency and better supply of fishery products for local populations through liberalization of imports of fishery products. Negative effects of globalization and deregulation identified in the Workshop included increased competition for the small-scale do mestic fisheries sector mainly through import of low priced fish products. It was felt that special measures are needed to protect and strengthen this sector. These included technical assistance, training and investment support as well as possibly fiscal measures and economic incentives. -

A survey system for quick estimates of some sectors of the fishing industry

No results found.Integrated information on the infrastructure of the fishing industry can be easily obtained through the application of "Quick Estimates Surveys". Furthermore, the new strategy which had been adopted for carrying out these surveys, resulted in information that were more linked and more consistent, For instance, tables of the wholesale and retail prices besides the landed catch (by species) on the same day at Ataka and Port Tawfiq fishing sites, were the outcome of the application of this strategy . Frame Surveys showed that Suez is self-sufficient in fishing boats and ice. Detailed information on fishing craft is shown in the first eighteen tables. Catch Assessment Surveys, together with interviews that were held with the staff of the Fisheries Division, Ministry of Agriculture, Suez have proved that there is a temporary immigration of fishermen to Ataka during its fishing season (Mid Sept. - Mid June) from fisheries in other governorates. Besides, as a result of this survey, it can be c oncluded that Ataka is the most productive fishing site on the Red Sea. Results of Cost and Earning Surveys, which are very essential for investment investigation and studies, were tabulated in detail according to type of boats.
