No results found.Aquaculture and inland fisheries are vital components of rural livelihoods worldwide, particularly in many Asian countries. Previous support to projects focused on aquaculture development where the goal was improved aquaculture. Today the focus has shifted to poverty alleviation and emphasis is placed more on the use of aquaculture as a tool for development. The benefits are improved food supply, reduced vulnerability to uncontrollable natural crashes in aquatic production, added employment and increased income. This publication is a report of the regional donor consultation held in Manila, Philippines from 27 to 28 November 2002. Nine donors and five regional organizations were represented. Discussions focused on the types of appropriate interventions needed in sustainable aquaculture development and mechanisms for their implementation. The conclusions of the report are targeted at donor agencies, international and regional institutions related to the fisheries sectors and natio nal policy-makers. -

No results found.In this paper we focus specifically on differences in the welfare impacts of COVID-19 on rural livelihoods between countries using nationally representative data that we disaggregate by food system typology. This typology captures key structural differences in the organization of rural economies and the vulnerabilities to rural livelihoods due to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdown measures. In particular, we draw on household survey data collected from 54 countries through the World Bank’s COVID-19 High Frequency Monitoring Dashboard to generate descriptive data on COVID-19 impacts in rural areas across three dimensions: income, coping strategies and food security. These descriptive data are disaggregated into four food system categories and contextualized and validated through a systematic review of rigorous, survey-based studies of COVID-19 impacts in rural areas. Through this analysis, the report provides insights on how COVID-19 is influencing rural livelihoods, how its impacts vary between countries and food system typologies, and, ultimately, how policymakers and the international community need to respond in order to foster an inclusive and sustainable recovery. -

No results found.In the Lao People's Democratic Republic, 80 percent of the rural population are subsistence farmers. Stronger agriculture systems are essential for the country to attain food and nutrition security, reduce poverty, and achieve the government’s vision of a developing country of upper-middle income with innovative, green and sustainable economic growth by 2030. The country’s agriculture sector is exposed to multiple risks: climatic, biological and economic. Flood, drought and storm are the most prevalent natural hazards, and are expected to become more intense and more frequent with climate change. Vulnerability of agriculture systems in the country is driven by a number of factors, including geographically scattered production due to the country’s topography and weak linkages to urban populations and regional markets; and a heavy dependency of the population on agriculture and natural resources as a source of employment, income and food, among others. Against this background, the project sought to enhance resilience to climate-related disasters and environmental sustainability of agriculture systems and livelihoods in three districts of Attapeu Province, one of the most marginalized and remote provinces in the country.
