    Biodiversity is critical for safeguarding global food security, underpinning healthy and nutritious diets, improving rural livelihoods, and enhancing the resilience of people and communities. The recent alarming findings on the threats of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO)’s The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture and the global assessment report of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services have put agricultural sectors at the center of the debate in sustaining the future of human well-being and livability of the planet. Against this background, the FAO Conference, in 2017, welcomed FAO’s initiative to act as Biodiversity Mainstreaming Platform1 (the Platform) and requested FAO to facilitate, in collaboration with its partners, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and other UN organizations, the integration in a structured and coherent manner of actions for the conservation, sustainable use, management and restoration of biological diversity across agricultural sectors at national, regional and international levels. FAO, working with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) co-organized the first global multistakeholder dialogue on biodiversity mainstreaming in Rome (May 2018) and four regional dialogues for Latin America and the Caribbean (Mexico, October 2018), Asia and the Pacific (Thailand, July 2019), the Near East (Jordan, November 2019), and Africa (Rwanda, November 2019).

    This report introduces FAO’s work on biodiversity mainstreaming, including the regional consultation process that took place in 2018 and 2019. It particularly focuses on presenting the outcomes of the Regional Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Biodiversity Mainstreaming across Agricultural Sectors in the African Region, held in Kigali, Rwanda, in November 2019. This report presents the main topics addressed in its opening, plenary, and closing sessions; and highlights the most relevant regional needs, priorities, and recommendations identified by the meeting participants.

    Despite sustained economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa, rural poverty, food insecurity, and malnutrition remain pervasive. These challenges are most acute in rural areas, where livelihoods, incomes, and food security are closely tied to agrifood systems. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive and inclusive social protection systems embedded within integrated rural development and agrifood system transformation strategies. Such approaches are essential to promote the economic inclusion of poor and vulnerable rural populations, safeguard their food and nutrition security, and strengthen their resilience capacities to climate-related shocks.FAO and the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) convened a Regional Policy Dialogue on strengthening social protection systems for rural populations. The Dialogue reviewed the current state of social protection in Africa’s rural areas, identified emerging issues and trends, examined gaps in coverage and financing, and provided strategic actions and recommendations to support African countries in advancing the SDGs and the Africa Agenda 2063. This brief summarizes the key recommendations from the Regional Policy Dialogue for strengthening social protection systems in Africa for inclusive rural transformation.

    Hunger in the Arab region worsened amid deepening crises in 2023. The Near East and North Africa Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition warns that the Arab region remains off-track to meet the food security and nutrition targets of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.In 2023, 66.1 million people, approximately 14 percent of the population in the Arab region, faced hunger. The report highlights that access to adequate food remains elusive for millions. Around 186.5 million people – 39.4 percent of the population – faced moderate or severe food insecurity, an increase of 1.1 percentage points from the previous year. Alarmingly, 72.7 million people experienced severe food insecurity.
