No results found.The Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) Project in the Philippines was initiated in August 2002 for the assessment of Philippine forest and tree resources as part of the framework of the Forest Resources Assessment Programme of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to support national forest assessments (NFA). The project aims to provide, among others, information on the distribution of forest and other wooded lands according to tree species composition, ownership and m anagement status, size of holdings, designation/protection status, commercial volume and growing stock, and felling and/or removals. The project was spearheaded by the Forest Management Bureau (FMB) and implemented in the field by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) operating units (DENR regional offices), in collaboration with the Forestry Department of FAO. The major emphasis of this report is to provide comprehensive information on the status of forest and trees outside forest in the country and analysis of the level of precision and reliability of generated data/information from forest inventory that is based on relatively low-intensity and systematic multi-stage sampling design. -

No results found.In developing and implementing forest land use plans to attain sustainable forest governance, it is necessary to determine and value priority ecosystem services derived by society from forest and watershed ecosystems. This study aimed at estimating the value of four ecosystem services in a forest management project site in Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino provinces, Philippines: provision of water services, soil erosion control, carbon storage and sequestration capacity, and biodiversity conservation. The Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) tool was used to value water provision services (using a cost-based approach), soil erosion control (using replacement cost method), and carbon storage and sequestration capacity (using social cost of carbon). Contingent valuation method was used to determine the willingness to pay for biodiversity conservation. BAU and Development scenarios were used in determining changes in forest and other land uses in the site as well as estimating the value of the ecosystem services. Results show increases in forestland area and amounts of carbon storage and sequestration, decreasing annual water yield due to projected declining rainfall amount, and decrease in total annual soil loss. Mean WTP is PhP170 (~ US$ 3.50)/household/year. The estimated values of the four ecosystem services provide baseline information for local governments in crafting payment for ecosystem services strategies to help fund forest conservation.Keywords: policies, financial mechanisms, sustainable forest management, governanceID: 3486628 -

There is almost always a reflection on the past and what needs to be done today. There are more than 40 faces in this book, yet the stories can easily be appreciated by all Filipinos (and beyond) and valued as an articulation of thoughts and hopes that may lead to action.

No results found.The degradation of ecosystems, including forests, and the associated loss of biodiversity, particularly due to human-induced threats and climate change, has gained increased attention from scientists and policymakers. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment presented a new conceptual framework that puts ecosystem services at the centre and links human well-being to the impacts on ecosystems of changes in natural resources. The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity initiative drew further attention to the economic benefits of conserving ecosystems and biodiversity, supporting the idea that economic instruments – if appropriately applied, developed and interpreted – can inform policy- and decision-making processes. Only a few ecosystem services, however, have explicit market value and are traded in open markets: many – especially those categorized as having “passive-use” value – remain invisible and are rarely accounted for in traditional economic systems. The failure to appropriately consider the full economic value of ecosystem services in decision making enables the continued degradation and loss of ecosystems and biodiversity. Most ecosystem services are considered public goods and tend to be overexploited by society. Many methods have been applied to the economic valuation of ecosystem services. The use of these methods, as well as the interpretation of their results, requires familiarity with the ecological, political, normative and socio-economic context and the science of economics. Recognizing, demonstrating and capturing the value of ecosystem services can play an important role in setting policy directions for ecosystem management and conservation and thus in increasing the provision of ecosystem services and their contributions to human well-being. The aim of this manual is to enhance understanding of ecosystem services and their valuation. The specific target group comprises governmental officers in planning units and field-level officers and practitioners in key government departments in Bangladesh responsible for project development, including the Ministry of Environment and Forests and its agencies. Most of the examples and case studies presented herein, therefore, are tailored to the Bangladesh context, but the general concepts, approaches and methods can be applied to a broad spectrum of situations. This manual focuses on valuing forest-related ecosystem services, including those provided by trees outside forests. It is expected to improve valuation efforts and help ensure the better use of such values in policymaking and decision making. Among other things, the manual explores the basics of financial mathematics (e.g. the time value of money; discounting; cost–benefit analysis; and profitability and risk indicators); the main methods of economic valuation; examples of the valuation of selected ecosystem services; and inputs for considering values in decision making. -

No results found.The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018. -

The results of FRA 2025 are available in several formats, including this report, an interactive story on key findings and an online database at https://fra-data.fao.org.
