No results found.For much of the world's tropical population, coral reefs are synonymous with reef fish and edible marine invertebrates. Reef-related fisheries are important to small-scale fisherfolk, as a source of both protein and livelihood security for local coastal communities. In all of Asia, coral reef resources play a role in the food and livelihood security of coastal communities. Perhaps nowhere in Asia in this role more important than in the Maldives. As a student working group in the Workshop put it, "The whole livelihood of the Maldivians depends on the reef resources." The Republic of Maldives initiated IRRM to improve the management of its reef resources. IRRM is supported by BOBP and combines scientific and fisherfolk knowledge with the expertise and input of all Ministries with jurisdiction in areas impacting reef resources. Issue areas for management under IRRM include (1) Reef fishery (2) Bait fishery for the tuna pole and line fishery (3) Coral mining (4) Tourism and fishery i nteractions and (5) Legal and institutional aspects of IRRM. The IRRM Workshop was convened to share scientific and socio-economic information on the five issue areas and to obtain a common understanding and agreement among the many government agencies, public interest groups and the private sector on the objectives and vision of the IRRN Programme. Participants examined the five issue areas and arrived at a consensus on recommendations to address each issue area. The Report and Proceedings c ontain the recommendations and the papers presented at the Workshop. -

No results found.Maldivians have been catching tu for nearly 1000 years from the coastal waters, free swimming schools and around drifting objects in the Indian Ocean. Tu catches in the Maldives reached its peak in 2006 with a reported catch of 166,000t (138,000t of skipjack and 23,000t of yellowfin tu). The pole-and-line fishery contributes 75-80% of all tu landings in the country. The remaining is caught by handline, troll line and longline. In the past the tu fishery had some difficulty in attracting young pe ople to work on the vessels. But with the increasing price of tu in the world markets the youth are keener to engage in the tu fishery. Although there is no shortage of fishermen to work on the vessels the fishery is now facing a number of challenges. The increasing oil price and the declining catches have forced several fishers to abandon the tu fishery. The boom in the tu fishery in the middle of the last decade resulted in fishers building larger vessels and install bigger engines. The declin e in fishery has made operation of these larger vessels uneconomical forcing the fishers to abandon these vessels. Another challenge is the lack of adequate livebait resources. Increasing size of the vessels has also put more pressure on the livebait resources. Local decline in livebait resources in some parts of the Maldives has forced the fishers to collect livebait from far away atolls resulting in an increase in the operation cost. Difficulty in obtaining ice and selling their catch was also highlighted by some fishers. In some seasons due to the increased amount of tu landings in the country the price of tu becomes very low making it uneconomical for the fishers to operate their vessels. It was suggested by some fishers that the handline tu fishery targeting large yellowfin has also affected the pole-and- line tu fishery but alysis of logbook data from the past two years has not shown a decline in catch landing in one fishery with an increase in landing in the other fishery.

Bien que le changement est une conséquence naturelle des interactions complexes, il doit être surveillé et même géré si le taux et la direction du changement risquent de compromettre la résilience du système. “Une approche écosystémique de l’aquaculture (AEA) est une stratégie pou r l’intégration de l’activité dans l’écosystème élargi de telle sorte qu’elle favorise le développement durable, l’équité et la résilience de l’interconnexion des systèmes socio-écologiques.” Etant une stratégie, l’approche écosystémique de l’aquaculture (AEA) n’est pas ce qu’on a fait, mais plutôt comment on l’a fait. La participation des parties intéressées est à la base de la stratégie. L’AEA exige un cadre politique approprié dans lequel la stratégie se développe en plusieurs é tapes: (i) la portée et la définition des limites des écosystèmes et l’identification de la partie intéressée; (ii) l’identification des problèmes principaux; (iii) la hiérarchisation des problèmes; (iv) la définition des objectifs opérationnels; (v) l’élaboration d’un plan de mise en oeuvre; (vi) le processus de mise en oeuvre correspondant qui comprend le renforcement, le suivi et l’évaluation, et (vii) un critique des politiques à long terme. Toutes ces étapes sont informées par les meilleures connaissances disponibles. La mise en oeuvre de l’AEA exigera le renforcement des institutions et des systèmes de gestion associés de sorte qu’une approche intégrée du développement de l’aquaculture peut être mise en oeuvre et compte entièrement des besoins et des impacts d’autres secteurs. La clé sera de développer des institutions capables d’intégration, notamment en fonction des objectifs et des normes convenus. L’adoption généralisée d’une AEA exigera un couplag e plus étroit de la science, la politique et la gestion. Elle exige aussi que les gouvernements incluent l’AEA dans leurs politiques de développement de l’aquaculture, stratégies et plans de développement.
