Synopsis (short abstract) In South Sudan, the risk of famine remains elevated and food security is expected to worsen in 2018. It is critical to enable rapid food production among the most vulnerable communities, protect their livelihoods and build their resilience, while increasing self-sufficiency. Worsening food security trends linked to continued conflict have been compounded by market failure, internal displacement and decreasing humanitarian access. To save lives in the coming year, the most vulnerable households need support to produce nutritious food for consumption and sale.

Years of conflict and significant economic deterioration have left South Sudan in the grip of serious food insecurity, with women and children the most vulnerable. Despite the recent peace agreement, extreme levels of acute food insecurity are expected to persist in areas of continued conflict and poor harvests, calling for immediate and unhindered food assistance and careful monitoring. For 2019, FAO requires USD 75 million to assist 4.8 million people to protect their livelihoods and increase their resilience to shocks.

One in two people in South Sudan will experience food insecurity during the country’s lean season (April–July). Climate shocks, conflict and insecurity, economic downturn and the spillover effects of the conflict in the Sudan are the key drivers of this crisis.Emergency agricultural assistance is vital to enable people to immediately access nutritious food while strengthening their livelihoods in the medium to long term. With a livelihood kit, a farming household can produce enough food to last nearly half a year, over and above their other sources of food.

The crisis that has been affecting Burundi since 2015 has worsened the humanitarian situation in the country with large segments of the population facing severe food insecurity. Population movements, the tense socio-economic conditions in Burundi along with new threats, such as animal diseases, a major spread of fall armyworm and climatic hazards, will likely have a significant impact on the food security situation. It is thus key to provide vulnerable populations with livelihood assistance in 2018.
