Synopsis (short abstract) Collection of breed population size data is critical for monitoring and guiding the national management of animal genetic resources. In many countries, there is a substantial gap regarding such data due to various reasons including the high costs of national livestock censuses, which are thus not frequently conducted, if they are conducted at all.This document is intended to be a brief guide for National Coordinators and other stakeholders on methods for collecting and/or estimating breed population size data. It reviews various data sources and methods, including censuses, surveys, and appraisals, presents case studies from different countries, and explores the use of emerging technologies in livestock data collection.
