Synopsis (short abstract) Asia contributes over 90 percent of the world’s aquaculture production Intensification has been a major contributor to the fast growth of aquaculture production in the region, leading to a rise in disease problems of culture animals Antimicrobial products are the most commonly used drugs to prevent and control common aquatic animal diseases in aquaculture Antimicrobial resistance ( occurs when micro organisms change when they are exposed to antimicrobial drugs Although the control over the use of antimicrobial products has been strengthened over the past decade, they are still commonly used in aquaculture in the region and control over the production and use of antimicrobial products for aquaculture is far from adequate in many Asian countries.

    Aquaculture sector in Asia-Pacific has grown rapidly during the past four decades and contributed significantly to food security, nutrition, livelihood and overall socioeconomic development in the region. Meanwhile, disease problem has become increasingly challenging in aquaculture. Un-prudent and poorly controlled use of anti-microbial in animal disease control in aquaculture can have significant contribution to AMR risk. Although the control over the use of antimicrobial in aquaculture through some regulatory frameworks has been strengthened over the past decade in the region, it is far from adequate and effective in many Asian countries. In order to support the members to effectively address AMR in aquaculture for public health and sustainability of the sector, FAO and Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA) jointly organized the regional consultation on AMR associated with aquaculture in Asia-Pacific on 4-6 September 2018. This publication documents the conduct of the regional consultation and its outputs, which identified major issues and gaps in tackling AMR issue in aquaculture and recommended desirable interventions and long-term strategy to effective mitigate AMR risk related to aquaculture in the region. The document also includes the seven country case studies on status of use of antimicrobial in aquaculture and the efforts to manage the risks of antimicrobial resistance, which were presented at the regional consultation.

    The need to address the risk of antimicrobial resistance ( to human and animal health has grown on the international political agenda in the last years In 2015 the World Health Assembly adopted an AMR global action plan advocating for a One Health approach and encouraging each country to adopt its own, targeted national strategy to deal with AMR’s negative impact on animal welfare and food security Maldives has followed through on the recommendation, developing the National Action Plan for Containment of Antimicrobial Resistance 2017 2022 The strategy was informed by the country’s geographical context and structure of its public health, livestock and aquaculture sectors In the past, the lack of commercial livestock food production limited the need for and development of veterinary health systems Recently, the Government of Maldives has pushed for greater food self sufficiency and security, putting emphasis on farm diversification into poultry and goat farming, as well as aquaculture In collaboration with FAO, the Government identified the capacity needs of the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture MoFMRA to carry out AMR surveillance, infection prevention and control, prudent antimicrobial use, and research and innovation in the agriculture sector.
