Major topics discussed were:distribution of fish stocks with particular attention to those occurring in the economic zones of two or more countries; (b)current issues in fish utilization and marketing in the Lesser Antilles; (e) cooperation with other organizations dea ling with fisheries in the sub-region, and (d) collection and processing of fishery statistical data. A list of the main recommendations on future actions to be endorsed by the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission is included as Annex D. -

No results found.The eighth session of the Committee on Aquaculture (CAQ) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) was held in Paris, France, from 13 to 15 March 2013. The session was attended by 17 Members of the Commission as well as observers from other international organizations. The agenda also included the fourteenth session of the Information System for the Promotion of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (SIPAM), which was organized concomitantly. During this session, the Committee reviewed the intersessional activities and outcomes of its subsidiary bodies. Moreover, the Committee discussed in particular key issues regarding coastal lagoons in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea and agreed on the elaboration of draft guidelines for their sustainable management. It also decided to pursue the development of a draft set of guidelines for the use of indicators to monitor the sustainable development of aquaculture in the GFCM area as well as to carry on activities and research on allocated zones for aquaculture (AZA). In light of the increasing role to be played by farmers’ organizations in the development process of sustainable aquaculture, a proposal to set up an aquaculture multi-stakeholder platform was tabled in order to increase knowledge capital and improve cooperation in the sector. This would be submitted to the thirty-seventh GFCM session. Furthermore, the Committee welcomed the initiative to undertake a regional review on the current status of aquaculture in the GFCM area with a view to providing timely information on the aquaculture sector in the region. No results found.The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held its thirteenth session in Marseille, France, from 7 to 11 February 2011. The session was attended by delegates from 21 Members of the Commission as well as observers from intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations together with the Russian Federation. The session appraised the achievements of its subsidiary bodies along with the outcome of the Coordinating Meeting of the Sub-Committees (CMSC). The Committee reviewed the topics addressed by the 17 technical meetings held by its subsidiary bodies. These included proposals for fishery management measures, research programmes, data collection schemes and development of Management Plans. It discussed several other technical issues connected to the exploitation of red coral and European eel, the status of elasmobranchs, the protection of seabirds, turtles and monk seals as well as the monitoring of the by-catc h in the Mediterranean fisheries. The SAC further commented on the outputs of the workshop on algal and jellyfish blooms which provided options to tackle the problems posed by this phenomenon on fisheries and also gave due importance to the results of the workshops on recreational fisheries and on fishing gear selectivity. Definitions of some socio-economic parameters within the Task 1 data collection framework were reviewed and options for the improvement of the collection and submission of bio logical data under this framework were considered. The Committee acknowledged the progress made in undertaking joint stock assessments of several demersal and small pelagic species and identified a way of progression of the use of Biological Reference Points. The SAC also reviewed the progress made on the development and management of GFCM databases, including the new Biological Parameters Database and the newly released e-Glossary, as well as that made on the issue of catch weight thresholds in logbook reporting. Finally, the Committee proposed the establishment of a new Working Group to specifically address the Black Sea issues and agreed upon its workplan for 2011.
