Synopsis (short abstract) FAO China ECTAD Highlights in October 2018: -The Technical Consultation on application of technology to strengthen African Swine Fever (ASF) control through rapid detection and response was held in Beijing, China from 11-12 October 2018. The meeting was organized by FAO Emergency Center for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP), with the objectives to a) introduce the concept of “application of technology to strengthen ASF control through rapid detection and response”; b) jointly design the details of the technical collaboration on updated validation results of the portable PCR; c) discuss and identify stakeholders and partners, pilot venues and implementation arrangements; and d) develop an action plan. -Ms Yu Qi from FAO China Emergency Center for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) Office participated in the OIE Sub-Regional Training on applying Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for spatial analysis of animal health data in Bangkok, Thailand from 16-19 October 2018. The main objective of the workshop was for participants to strengthen their knowledge and skills on the analysis of disease data.

    FAO China ECTAD Highlights in November 2018: The FAO China Emergency Center for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) Office organized the Chinese trainers of China Field Epidemiology Training Program for Veterinarians (CFETPV) to participate in the 15th International Symposium of Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics (ISVEE 15) in Chiang Mai, Thailand from 12-16 November 2018. ISVEE 15 was a global forum for interdisciplinary collaboration and communication among graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, practitioners, junior and senior researchers, as well as policymakers, health, veterinary public health, social science, and animal health economic professionals, for learning and sharing with a vision of building a better life tomorrow for veterinary epidemiology at the local, regional, and international levels. FAO Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO), Dr Juan Lubroth was invited to visit the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) of China on 16 November 2018. During his visit, Dr Lubroth met with Mr Yu Kangzhen, Vice Minister of MARA, Mr Zhang Zhongqiu, Chief Veterinary Officer of China, Mr Feng Zhongwu, Deputy Director-General, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau, MARA and other senior officers of MARA. The 4th Multilateral Cross-Border Meeting in the Upper Mekong Sub-region to Strengthen Collaboration of Transboundary Animal Disease Control among China, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Viet Nam was held in Beijing, China from 22-24 November 2018. The meeting was co-organized by FAO China Emergency Center for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) of China.

    According to the framework of the CFETPV fourth cohort, the fourth training module on risk analysis and modelling for early warning was held in Qingdao, Shandong Province from 9-27 April 2018. An ASF delegation, which consisted of technical experts from FAO headquarters and FAO ECTAD Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) paid a visit to China from 20-25 April 2018 to better understand the ASF emergency preparedness for prevention and control in China. Great achievements have been made in recent years, especially in the areas of veterinary epidemiology capacity building, strengthening cooperation with neighbouring countries in the region as well as improving joint prevention and control of TADs.
