Synopsis (short abstract) The package of modern aquaculture practices involves high-cost technologies. However, there is an increasing awareness towards development of low-cost, energy-saving, systems and several efforts have been directed towards achieving this goal during the recent past. Measures such as reduction in the rate of stocking densities and elimination of the feed component have been adopted coupled with low/reduced targets of production. In addition to these known approaches, a novel synergistic approach has been adopted with high targets of production in the experiments conducted at the Jaunpur Centre of the All India Coordinated Research Project on Composite Fish Culture and Fish Seed Production. Using either phosphatic or nitrogenous fertilisers and aquatic weeds, yields of the order of 2 609–3 330 and 3 642 – 3 966 kg/ha in 9 months have been realied at input costs of Rs 1.13 - Rs 1.77 (US$ 0.09–0.15) but even higher yields ranging from 4 074 kg/ha/ 9 months to 4 480 kg/ha/yr have been obta ined with aquatic weeds alone at at remarkably low input costs of Rs 0.93 - Rs 1.42 (US$ 0.08–0.12) per per kilogram of fish suggesting that the newly developed, low cost, labour intensive, technology could be recommended for extensive adoption in the rural areas, especially in the Third World where submerged aquatic vegetation such as Hydrilla, Potamogeton and Ceratophyllum or terrestrial vegetation like grasses or fodder are abundantly available

    The need for developing suitable feeds based on locally available inexpensive ingredients has been widely recognized. Since lack of trained personnel is the main constraint in the development of fish feed technology in developing countries, the FAO/UNDP Aquaculture Development and Coordination Programme (ADCP) organized a special training course in fish feed technology at the College of Fisheries, University of Washington, Seattle, with a view to forming a small corps of fish feed specialists wh o could then be the focal points for future feed development programmes in their respective countries. The first report of the training course was presented in the report ADCP /REP/79/8. This present volume represents the edited texts of lectures presented by different specialists. Some additional material has been included for more complete coverage of the subject. Together, these texts may be considered to constitute a manual on fish feed technology, even though they were not prepared for that purpose. Twenty-six papers are included, under the general headings: (1) Digestion, physiology and anatomy; (2) nutritional bioenergetics; (3) nutritional biochemistry; (4) feedstuffs; (5) feed formulation; (6) feed manufacturing technology; (7) practical diets; and (8) quality control. Appendices include conversion tables, electrical data, and details on pelletability of selective feedstuffs, pellet die specifications, and equipment requirements for an 8 ton an hour feed mill.

    This book is the proceedings of a meeting held in Bangkok in December 1992 on the use of farm-made feeds in Asia. It contains eleven country reviews of the topic, for Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Nine technical papers are also included. Three are on-farm feed preparation and feeding strategies - for carps and tilapias, for catfish and snakehead, and for marine shrimp and prawns. Five other working papers are on economics, the selection of equipment, feed ingredients, formulation and on-farm management, and supplementary feeding in semi-intensive aquaculture, all directed at farm-made, rather than commercial feeds. The ninth working paper is a regional overview of aquafeeds in Asia. An analysis of the material in the eleven country papers is also presented.

    This Fisheries Technical Paper provides an overview of the main concepts involved in the assessment and management of fishing capacity. It discusses why capacity management and the problem of overcapacity have become key issues for fisheries management in the new millennium. The paper explains why overcapacity develops in the fishery and the role that fisheries management has played in contributing to this development in the past. Methods for estimating current and desired levels of capaci ty are discussed in a non-technical manner, and a range of potential indicators of overcapacity is described. The effectiveness of various capacity management programmes that have been applied in various fisheries around the world is also discussed, along with an explanation as to why many of these programmes have been ineffective. Potential management systems that have proven effective in reducing overcapacity are also presented and discussed.
