Synopsis (short abstract) On 23 May 2024, the project, jointly with the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for South-East Asia (WHO SEARO), organized the virtual workshop on “GEMS/Food contaminants database”, with the following objectives:• describe an overview of the GEMS/Food programme and GEMS/Food contaminants database; • enhance understanding on minimum requirements for qualified data to be submitted to GEMS/Food contaminants database;• enhance members' recognition of data contribution to GEMS/Food contaminants database as well as Codex work; and• provide a forum for countries’ discussion on occurrence data and contaminants issues as well as make network in Asia.A total of 29 food safety officials from nine Asian countries (Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Viet Nam) and representatives from the ASEAN Risk Assessment Centre for Food Safety (ARAC) secretariat participated in the workshop. The event was facilitated by the Project Coordinator, with technical input from experts (including one from Japan).The workshop included lectures and group exercises. Evaluation results indicated that participants were satisfied with the workshop. Most found the topics, presentations, and technical insights valuable and relevant to their needs. The presentations and exercises significantly improved their understanding of the GEMS/Food programme and how to access and contribute to the GEMS/Food Contaminants Database. Additionally, participants expressed a strong interest in submitting occurrence data to the database.

    A regional training workshop entitled “Enhancing Effective Participation in Codex Activities in ASEAN Countries” as a part of the FAO regional project “Support for Capacity Building for International Food Safety Standard Development and Implementation in ASEAN Countries (GCP/RAS/295/JPN)” was held on 9-11 January 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand. The five-year regional project was launched in February 2016 with financial assistance from the Government of Japan. The project has already carried out significant activities, including the organizing of two national training courses in Lao PDR and Myanmar, and the identification of the current conditions/baselines and challenges on the implementation of international/national standards in each ASEAN country. Main objectives of the regional workshop were to provide participants with: 1) an enhanced understanding of the impact of Codex standards on international trade, structure and function of Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), up-to-date information of recent Codex meetings, food safety risk analysis and risk assessment including the role of scientific expert bodies such as JECFA, JMPR and JEMRA, 2) An opportunity to share knowledge and experience on current national Codex activities in ASEAN countries, and 3) Training on development of regional/national positions through mock sessions to enhance participants’ capacity to contribute effectively to Codex work. 29 participants from ten ASEAN countries from the agencies mainly responsible for food safety control with regard to standard development and implementation as well as the work of the Codex have attended. Many resource persons from Japan, Thailand, ASEAN Secretariat, Food Industry Asia, AETS and FAORAP contributed to the workshop.

    A national training course on “Strengthening Food Safety Standard Setting and Effective Participation in Codex activities in Myanmar” as a part of FAO Regional project “Support for Capacity Building for International Food Safety Standard Development and Implementation in ASEAN Countries” (GCP/RAS/295/JPN) was held on 20-21 December 2016 at Yangon, Myanmar. The objectives of the training course were to provide participants with 1) an enhanced understanding of the structure and function of Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) and National Codex Committee, 2) an enhanced knowledge about effective participation in Codex activities, 3) draft road map for improving standard development activities and strengthening Codex activities. The training course was attended by 30 participants from the Government of Myanmar and trade associations, who are mainly responsible for food safety control with regard to standard development and implementation as well as the work of the Codex.
