Synopsis (short abstract) The Science and Innovation Forum (SIF) 2024 Report captures the key outcomes and insights from one of the cornerstone events of the World Food Forum (WFF), held from 14–18 October 2024. Under the theme “Inclusive Science and Innovation for Agrifood Systems Transformation, Leaving No One Behind,” the report explores how inclusive, equitable, and accessible science and innovation can drive sustainable change in global agrifood systems.The report is structured around three impactful deep dives that reflect the diverse ways science, technology and innovation are shaping agrifood systems. Community-driven innovation highlights the power of local knowledge and grassroots solutions in addressing agrifood system challenges. Digital agriculture explores how emerging technologies such as AI and data-driven tools are transforming farming practices, improving efficiency, and enhancing resilience. Meanwhile, biotechnologies examine the responsible and inclusive application of scientific advancements to improve crop yields, sustainability, and food security. The report also examines the barriers to adoption, how we can overcome them along with exploring how we can bring impact at scale. The report brings together voices from Nobel laureates, scientists, youth, farmers, and policymakers to highlight real-world innovations that are shaping a more resilient and equitable future for food and agriculture.

    This comprehensive report provides an overview of the objectives, speakers, and outcomes of each session of the second edition of the FAO Science and Innovation Forum (SIF) 2023. The SIF, a pivotal component of the annual flagship World Food Forum, unfolded from 18 to 20 October 2023 at FAO headquarters.Centered around the theme of leveraging science and innovation for the transformative enhancement of agrifood systems in the context of climate action, the Forum fostered discussions aimed at identifying concrete actions. It served as a platform for strategic deliberations on the nuanced ways in which science, technology, and innovation contribute to vulnerability, impact, and capacities, crucial for reshaping agrifood systems and bolstering climate action.Noteworthy attendance marked the event, with a total of 8 967 registrants, comprising 4 000 in-person participants and 7 153 virtual attendees representing diverse global backgrounds. The Forum featured the insights and perspectives of nearly 150 speakers drawn from academia, research, business, government, non-governmental organizations, farmers' organizations, young entrepreneurs, and Indigenous Peoples. These experts actively contributed to the discourse through engaging roundtables and panel discussions.

    Food systems and agriculture are at a crossroads and a profound transformation is needed at all scales, not only to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2) to “end hunger and all forms of malnutrition” by 2030 but also to address Agenda 2030 in its entirety, including human and environmental health, climate change, equity and social stability. Current trends, such as the new increase, since 2014, in the number of undernourished people and the alarming rate of all forms of malnutrition in all countries, and related tensions will be exacerbated if we fail to design and implement, in a very near future, food systems that ensure food security and nutrition while addressing all sustainability challenges. Agroecological and other innovative approaches in agriculture are increasingly praised for their potential contribution to reach these crucial goals. This report adopts a dynamic perspective, centred on the key concepts of transition and transformation. Ultimately, this rich and comprehensive report aims to fuel an exciting policy convergence process and help remove the lock-ins by developing a common understanding of these matters, so that concrete transition pathways can be implemented at all relevant scales, from farm, community and landscape to national, regional and global levels.
