    Animal feeding influences every sector of the livestock industry. High quality animal feed with the correct nutritional content and free from harmful contaminants, such as microbiological agents or their toxins, ensures that animals will be in the best possible condition, content and healthy. As a result animals will produce increased yields of quality products (meat, milk, eggs or wool) resulting in improved health and wellbeing of the human population. This publication provides comprehensiv e guidance on the requirements of a microbiology laboratory performing animal feed analysis and includes examples of standard operating procedures, prepared by experts from around the world. These procedures will assist laboratories in attaining the competence required, will enhance the quality of data reported and ensure the safety of laboratory workers. The procedures contained in this publication are compliant with ISO/IEC 17025:2005 (General requirements for the competence of testing and cal ibration laboratories) and take into account ISO 14001:2004 (Environmental management systems) and BS OHSAS 18001:2007 (Occupational health and safety management systems) and will assist laboratories to gain accreditation or certification. This publication will be useful for laboratory analysts, laboratory managers, students and teachers and will enable workers in the livestock industry to appreciate the importance of proven reliable data and quality assurance. Implementing the procedures wil l strengthen the research and education capabilities of students and promote a better trading environment between developing and developed economies. This will have long-term benefits and promote investment in feed industries and R&D.

    Animal health laboratories play a crucial role in veterinary disease diagnosis and surveillance for the prevention and control of transboundary animal diseases, including those of economic impact or zoonotic threat with potential pandemic risk. Enhancing the diagnostic capacity of laboratories is an essential pillar for generating accurate data, particularly in settings where fundamental gaps and capacity constraints may prevent the early, rapid and reliable detection of many animal diseases. Importantly, the constant evolution of pathogens coupled with the rise of technology and assay development calls for ongoing guidance on current protocols and techniques. This is also particularly essential to ensure the use of carefully developed and validated tests. This compendium of protocols aims to contribute to capacity building efforts for sustainable and reliable functioning of animal health laboratories in Member States. It provides a practical and pragmatic resource for novel or updated validated diagnostic techniques to be introduced in accordance with a sustainable quality management system to ensure specific, accurate and reproducible results. The selected diseases included in this document are the most common priority zoonotic diseases (PZDs) identified in Africa. For each selected disease, the diagnostic protocols are explained focusing on assays that have been tested and validated by references laboratories to ensure their fitness for purpose. Laboratories around the world may use this compendium of protocols as guidance to update, enhance or expand their diagnostic assays.

    This Joint ISTA and FAO Handbook provides comprehensive guidelines for the setting up and managing of seed testing laboratories, including those that cater to small- and medium-scale seed enterprises and farmers’ cooperatives, which operate in low input production systems. The adherence to the guidelines by seed testing laboratories results in the use of uniform procedures across the board thereby facilitating inter-laboratory transferability of data. This harmonization enhances confidence in seed quality assurance mechanisms. The publication is an update of a previous one that was also jointly published by both organizations in 1969 and revised in 1979 and 1983. Its utility is enhanced by a set of new up-to-date information that builds upon existing data. The Handbook provides guidance on the range of seed testing equipment, procedures, and management systems that have become available in the several decades since the previous editions. Seed testing is a critical component of the seed value chain and is essential for the production of quality seeds, i.e. seeds that are alive, can germinate and produce vigorous seedlings; are healthy and come from lots that meet set thresholds for genetic and analytical purity. The Handbook covers all aspects of seed testing, from laboratory design and equipment selection to sample preparation, testing methods, and data analysis. Importantly, the publication also addresses the challenges of testing seeds in low input systems and provides guidance on how to adapt procedures to these settings. Therefore, it serves as a reference material and training resource for everyone involved in seed quality assurance procedures, in particular the personnel of seed testing laboratories and regulatory agencies; seed producers and farmers. The updated publication represents a significant improvement over previous guidelines, as it incorporates advances in technology and provides guidance on a broader range of testing procedures. The guidelines are designed to be adaptable to different contexts and seed types and include recommendations for quality management systems, proficiency testing, and inter-laboratory comparisons, which are essential for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of seed testing results.
