    Climate change, nature loss and poverty are major intertwined crises that mutually reinforce each other. This is particularly true for smallholder farmers in Africa’s drylands: they are the hardest hit by the climate crisis, which contributes to the degradation of the land upon which their livelihoods depend. Further pushed into poverty, rural people are forced to resort to unsustainable land practices for survival, feeding the cycle of environmental degradation and climate change. Intertwined crises need integrated approaches, such as nature-based solutions (NbS) that protect natural ecosystems and address societal challenges. Tree Aid works in Africa’s drylands to unlock the potential of trees to tackle poverty and improve the environment. Here, we present a quantitative NbS case study looking at the impacts of the adoption of forest natural resource management (NRM) and increased production of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) among smallholder farmers in the Segou region in Mali between July 2017 and July 2020. This project was a partnership between Tree Aid, the UK funded Darwin Initiative and local partner Sahel Eco.Its socioeconomic impact was evaluated with focus group discussions, baseline and endline assessments using the Rural Household Multi-Indicator Survey (RHoMIS) (https://www.rhomis.org/). Ecosystem restoration impacts were assessed by ecological surveys and data from permanent monitoring plots.We demonstrate that NRM and NTFPs delivered positive outcomes for people (reduction of project population living below the poverty line), biodiversity (+20,404ha of land under improved management), and climate (improved climate resilience through better access to natural resources). This evidences the viability of high-quality NbS in Africa’s drylands and calls for greater long-term restoration investment and deployment in the region informed by and delivered through local communities and organisations.     Recent population growth in Uzbekistan necessitates increase in productivity of agricultural crops extensively or intensively. This report shows how the concept of a farmer field school can help to improve the food security of small farmers and to involve uncultivated desert lands in production of food crops.By reading this report, you will find out how two farmer field schools were implemented in research sites located in Durmon and Chuya villages of Uzbekistan. The report explains that the improved wheat variety resulted in 116 to 241 percent higher grain yield than the local variety. The second major outcome specified in this report is that winter chickpea was successfully cultivated in the cold winter desert. Read this report to learn the following important impacts:-Adoption of improved wheat varieties would play an important role in improving food security of the farmers living in the cold winter desert of Uzbekistan.-Food security in the cold winter deserts can be improved by cultivating chickpea on previously uncultivated land and help ease pressure on the limited cultivable land in Uzbekistan.

    Participatory, Agroecological and Gender-Sensitive Approaches to Improved Nutrition: a Case Study In Malawi 2013

    This paper examines a participatory agriculture and nutrition program in northern Malawi that successfully improved child growth, crop diversity, food security through innovative educational strategies and sustainable agriculture. Malawi is a relevant case study, as a low-income country where the majority of people are rural smallholder farmers, and over the last decade the government has pursued an agricultural input subsidy program, with conflicting results. Persistent food insecurity and heav y reliance on maize as a food source in Malawi has multidimensional impacts on families, including low dietary diversity and child undernutrition. Women’s agency and access to agricultural resources is very limited in Malawi, with early marriage associated with low dietary diversity, early pregnancy and high spousal violence for women. Rural Malawian women have less access to education, lower access to land, credit, seeds and other agricultural resources compared to men. In addition they are con strained by highly unequal workloads, including agricultural labor, household tasks and child care responsibilities.
