    Since dairy meal is becoming increasingly expensive in Kenya and threatens the fish rearing industry, a systematic study was initiated on the possibility of using aquatic plants and Nile perch silage. The water plants, Azolla niloticus, Lemna perpusilla and Pistia striatotis were tested as a fishmeal for Tilapia zillii and riverine fishes. Low growth rates were achieved in the tilapias. The value of the Azolla protein in fish diet is discussed in relation to dietary requirement in cultured fish. This study demonstrates that the water plant Azolla niloticus together with Nile perch silage as a supplement can be used as a complete diet for cultured fish. It is hoped that the project will help provide detailed information on the nutritional value of the water plant Azolla niloticus and its long-term susceptibility to various inclusions as a complete feed, and conduct least cost feed formulations to make recommendations as to the maximum inclusion levels.

    Eritrea faces post harvest losses ( of approximately 30 percent across most, if not all, its staple grain harvests Post harvest losses impact the entire country’s economy, but most directly smallholder farmers and their families Initial data indicates that there are an estimated 500 000 smallholder farmer households in Eritrea, and approximately 450 000 to 500 000 hectares of land are cultivated However, due to traditional farming practices and consecutive droughts, production does not usually meet consumption requirements Low agricultural productivity is one of the major challenges, which, combined with PHL, is the major factor giving rise to the necessity to import foodstuffs Against this background, the project aimed to address significant PHL in the country caused by poor handling, drying and storage, and to contribute to increased self reliance of agricultural communities This would be achieved through the provision of post harvest handling training and household hermetic storage equipment.

    Rural youth employment and agri-food systems in Uganda

    Almost 88 percent of the world’s 1.2 billion youth live in developing countries. Globally, young people account for approximately 24 percent of the working poor. Although the world’s youth population is expected to grow, employment and entrepreneurial opportunities for young women and men remain limited – particularly for those living in economically stagnant rural areas of developing countries. Hence, creating more productive and beneficial jobs for the rural youth is particularly urgent. The FAO Integrated Country Approach (ICA) for boosting decent jobs for youth in the agri-food system project, currently implemented in Senegal, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Guatemala, aims to address this challenge by creating more and better employment opportunities for youth in rural areas and agri-food systems. To do so, ICA combines different interventions, such as capacity development, institutional support, knowledge generation and partnership creation. This context analysis provides an overview of Uganda, describing youth employment challenges, policies and programmes in place as well as FAO’s priorities on decent rural youth employment. Fianlly, it also analyses the 14 to 17 age cohort involvement in the agricultural sector and country’s migration and refugee governance.

    Towards climate-responsible peatlands management 2014

    Peatlands are lands with a naturally accumulated peat layer at their surface. In their natural state, peatlands support a large range of habitats and provide a home for unique biodiversity. Even though peatlands extend over a relatively small portion of the earth’s land surface, they hold a large pool of carbon. Along with storing large quantities of carbon, peatlands also play an important role in the retention, purification and release of water and in the mitigation of droughts and floods. Whe n drained, peatlands become net sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Because of drainage, organic soils are currently the third-largest emitter of GHGs in the Agriculture, Forestry and Land Use sector. The aim of this guidebook is to support the reduction of GHG emissions from managed peatlands and present guidance for responsible management practices that can maintain peatlands ecosystem services while sustaining and improving local livelihoods. This guidebook also provides an overview of the present knowledge on peatlands, including their geographic distribution, ecological characteristics and socio-economic importance.
