Synopsis (short abstract) Lake Tanganyika, shared by Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the United Republic of Tanzania and Zambia, faces critical challenges in fisheries management and aquatic biodiversity conservation. Overfishing, particularly of juvenile fish, has led to declining fish stocks and the potential collapse of fisheries. Contributing factors include unregulated access, illegal fishing practices, inadequate scientific data and weak coordination between national and regional authorities. To address these challenges, the Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA), established in 2009, was mandated to coordinate fisheries and environmental initiatives at a regional level. In collaboration with FAO, the LTA secured funding from the European Union to launch the LATAFIMA project, part of the E€OFISH programme (Contribution of Sustainable Fisheries to the Blue Economy of the Eastern Africa, Southern Africa and Indian Ocean region). The project’s main objectives were to strengthen regional policies and institutional frameworks for sustainable fisheries management and to develop action plans to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

    Strengthening Fisheries Management Regional Processes in the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic Region - GCP/RAF/522/EC 2024

    FAO established the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF) to promote the sustainable use of living marine resources within its area of jurisdiction, through the proper management and development of fisheries and fishing operations. The Scientific Sub-Committee (SSC) supports the CECAF in reviewing the outcomes and recommendations of the fisheries working groups, to formulate scientific advice for improved management and recommendations for future actions. From previous SSC sessions it emerged that CECAF’s performance was not meeting the expectations of its member nations. In view of this, an independent cost-benefit analysis (CBA) study was conducted, aimed at restructuring the CECAF to improve its delivery to members. The general objective of this European Union-funded project was to contribute to strengthening fisheries management regional processes in the CECAF region, by supporting the organization of the CECAF intersessional follow-up meeting on the outcomes of the independent CBA study, as well as the implementation of the Ninth Session of the SSC.

    Fisheries using anchored/moored fish aggregating devices (aFADs) in the Caribbean have grown substantially in the last ten years, increasing catches of pelagic species but also of vulnerable and overexploited stocks of species. This has made it even more necessary to regulate aFADs numbers and density to avoid adverse social and economic consequences. Other concerns in the sustainable management of aFADs include the economic impact of natural occurrences such as strong hurricanes, and the lack of reporting of aFADs numbers, locations, lifespan and replacement. In addition to the above, issues remain related to resource access via aFADs fisheries, property rights claims, and disagreements on the scope of aFADs aggregated resources. This project aimed to support the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission (WECAFC) Secretariat’s coordinating role of connected undertakings on large pelagic fisheries and related species and fisheries, and to strengthen the capacity of the WECAFC Working Group (WG) on the development of sustainable moored fish aggregating device (FAD) fishing.

    Triggering Transformative Change to Sustainably Develop Fisheries Value chain in the Greater Sepik Region 2022

    This publication briefs the basic elements, aspects and the adopted approach of the FAO-led EU-funded STREIT Programme in Papua New Guinea in developing sustainably fisheries value chain in the Greater Sepik Region. Cocoa, Vanilla and Fisheries are the three target value chains of this Programme. The publication presents how the multistakeholder partnership approach adopted by the Programme to engage different sectors of society and describes the basic domains of support provided by the programme. It also, display the causal sequence (Theory of Change) of steps envisaged by the Programme in order to trigger a transformative change for materialising sustainable development in the fisheries value chain in the area.
