    This INFOSAN Activity Report provides an overview of the major events, activities, and information products relating to INFOSAN in 2020/2021. Aiming to prevent the international spread of contaminated food and foodborne diseases through international food trade, International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN) has been set by FAO and WHO for connecting national authorities worldwide to strengthen national and international food safety systems. Since its launch in 2004, INFOSAN has continued to grow and develop forging functional links with regional food safety networks and initiatives, and building on a strong global reputation for efficiency and effectiveness in the context of international food safety emergency response. During the 2020/2021 biennium, the INFOSAN Secretariat responded to 375 international food safety events representing the highest number of incidents since the launch of the Network, and nearly double the number of events responded to during the last biennium (162 incidents in the 2018/2019 biennium). The increase in activity could be attributed to the increased awareness of food safety risks, capacity-building activities delivered by the INFOSAN Secretariat, increased reporting of food safety issues, webinars and workshops with FAO and WHO Member States, increased capacity at the INFOSAN Secretariat, and stronger collaboration with key partners. Biological hazards were responsible for the largest number of INFOSAN events, the most common of which was Salmonella spp. The rest of the incidents involved undeclared allergens, physical hazards, chemical hazards, and hazards that remained unidentified. The most implicated food categories were fish and other seafood, followed by milk and dairy products, meat and meat products, and snacks & desserts. The majority of the 375 events involved Member States in the European Region, followed by the African Region, the Region of the Americas, the Western Pacific Region, the Eastern Mediterranean Region, and the South-East Asia Region. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the INFOSAN Secretariat played an important role in communicating information and updates on COVID-19 and food safety to its members. This has been achieved by launching a call for questions on food safety and COVID-19, followed by a series of webinars for INFOSAN members to introduce the FAO/WHO guidance documents on food safety and COVID-19.

    The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held its twelfth session in Budva, Montenegro, from 25 to 29 January 2010. The Session was attended by delegates from nineteen Members of the Commission. The Committee reviewed the activities and results obtained by its subsidiary bodies along with the proposals of the Coordinating Meeting of the Sub-Committees (CMSC), as well as the achievements by the FAO regional projects in suppor t to the GFCM activities. It reflected on the management advice drawn up by the Sub-Committee on Stock Assessment on the basis of thirty-one stock assessments and agreed that the existing scientific evidence sufficed to support that the Commission takes relevant management measures notably to establish a regional logbook and to monitor the fishing capacity in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The SAC suggested that, in future, management advice on small pelagic fisheries should bene fit more from the development of biological Reference Points for Biomass. It further discussed several important topics including recreational fisheries, improvement of gear selectivity and reduction of bycatch, the impact of climate change, the impact of alien species on fisheries and other issues such as the exploitation of red corals, the status of elasmobranch species and the follow-up on fisheries-restricted areas. The Committee appraised the data exchange protocols and related el ectronic tools developed by the Secretariat for the submission of Task 1 data. It also proposed that the criteria to identify sensitive habitats should be revisited and amended. Furthermore, the Committee acknowledged the proposal on the new functioning of the SCSA working groups on stock assessments, on the progress made on the updating of the SAC glossary and on updating of the reference frame of SAC and the establishment of a future strategic workplan. Finally, the SAC agreed upon i ts workplan for 2010 and renewed the mandate of the bureau for another two-year term and nominated a new coordinator for each of its four Sub-Committees.

    INFOSAN Members’ Guide 2020
    The purpose of this document is to serve as a functional reference guide for members of the International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN). The guide is split into two parts covering both organizational and practical information about INFOSAN and member participation. Part A of the guide provides a general overview of the INFOSAN structure, including services for INFOSAN members, and it details the Network organisation, including the roles and responsibilities of the members, the Secretariat and the Advisory Group. Part B of the guide describes operational aspects around the communication of international food safety incidents (the main function of INFOSAN). Sources of information are described along with guidance on the process for reporting food safety incidents to the INFOSAN Secretariat. This part of the guide also provides details on the INFOSAN Community Website (ICW) and instructions pertaining to the designation and registration of new members.
