Synopsis (short abstract) The present compendium, which was originally published in an advance form as document FL/CECAF/82/4, covers the fisheries legislation in force, to the extent known, in the coastal countries of the area served by the FAO Fisheries Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic. The Compendium has been republished in a revised and updated form as a Legislative Study in order to give wider distribution to the information and to provide a uniform framework for the publication of regional compendia of fisheries legislation. Le présent recueil, initialement publié sous la côte FL/CECAF/82/5, porte sur la législation des pêches en vigueur, autant que l'on sache, dans les pays africains membres du Comité des Pêche de la FAO pour l'Atlantique Centre Est. La nouvelle édition, corrigée et remise à jour constitue une Etude Législative, destinée à assurer une meilleure diffusion des informations et fournir un cadre uniforme pour la publication des recueils régionaux des législations sur les pêches.

    A permanent FAO Working Group composed of scientists from the coastal States, and from countries or organizations that play an active role in Northwest African pelagic fisheries, was established in March 2001. The overall objective of the Working Group is to assess the state of the small pelagic resources in Northwest Africa and make recommendations on fisheries management and exploitation options aimed at ensuring optimal and sustainable use of small pelagic fish resources for the benefit of coastal countries. The nineteenth meeting of the FAO Working Group on the Assessment of Small Pelagic Fish off Northwest Africa was held in Casablanca, Morocco, from 8–13 July 2019. The meeting was organized by FAO in collaboration with the National Institute of Fisheries Research (INRH) of Morocco. Un groupe de travail permanent de la FAO composé de scientifiques des États côtiers et de pays ou d’organisations jouant un rôle actif dans les pêcheries pélagiques d’Afrique du Nord-Ouest a été créé en mars 2001. L’objectif général du groupe de travail est d’évaluer l’état des ressources pélagiques du nord-ouest de l’Afrique et formuler des recommandations sur les options de gestion et d’exploitation de la pêche visant à assurer une utilisation optimale et durable des ressources halieutiques en petits pélagiques au profit des pays côtiers. La dix-neuvième réunion du groupe de travail de la FAO sur l'évaluation des petits poissons pélagiques au large de l'Afrique du Nord-Ouest s'est tenue à Casablanca (Maroc) du 8 au 13 juillet 2019. La réunion a été organisée par la FAO en collaboration avec l'Institut National de Recherche Halieutique (INRH) du Maroc.

    This publication is intended to assist anyone involved in the development or implementation of a legal or institutional framework to promote integrated coastal management (ICM). It includes revised versions of some of the information contained in the 1994 FAO publication "Legal and Institutional Aspects of Integrated Coastal Area Management in National Legislation" and the 1998 FAO Publication "Integrated Coastal Area Management and Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries", FAO Guidelines. However t he focus of this publication is on identifying and providing practical guidance on how to deal with typical issues that arise in the development, drafting and implementation of ICM legislation. In doing so it draws upon the experiences of a range of countries throughout the world which are at various stages of developing and implementing legislation to promote ICM.
